2017 Movies

Zamros said:
There wasn't much emotion which, given some of the film's story, is a missed opportunity. There was one scene that got me emotionally invested, and it wasn't at all related to the main plot.

There was some good amount of emotion buried in a few spots, it was just buried by all of the jokes. The movies really needs less jokes and a pacing change to make it a better movie.

I echo many of @"Zamros" 's thoughts on Thor 3.  I enjoyed it, but it's absolutely in the lowest echelon of the MCU for me.  There is way, way, way too much forced humor in this one.  At times I was under the impression that jokes were inserted into the middle of virtually every sentence of what was originally a more straightforward script.  Some of it works, but when there's just gag after gag, they lose their luster.  Thor felt like a very different character than in previous films, and I don't particularly care for this new characterization too much.  The whole thing felt much more like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie than a Thor sequel - and while I've come around on the Guardians since my first viewing, I really feel that this was the wrong approach for this character.  My biggest gripes beyond that:

  • They skipped the "searching for the Infinity Stones" plot - that would have probably been a more interesting story thread, rather than the hedonistic gladiator junkyard planet.
  • Where was Lady Sif?  We saw the other members of the Warriors Four bite it.  She was Thor's almost-kinda love interest last time around, and enjoyed two Agents of SHIELD guest spots - what happened to her?
  • Odin was actually a tyrannical conqueror?  Huh?  This revelation came out of nowhere, and ultimately didn't matter much.
  • Even by Marvel standards, these were lame villains. The weakest crop since the fake Mandarin.  Very dull characters.
  • Thor appears to be trusting Loki again at the end?  He's walking around the ship without any restraints or anything, likely in possession of the Tesseract.  While he did help the evacuation of Asgard, he absolutely has not earned this level of trust.

Gripes aside, it's a fun watch, but probably not one I'll revisit terribly often like, say, The Winter Soldier.

Thor: Ragnarok

Thor-3-520x274.jpg

Ragnarok was my most anticipated movie of 2017. Hell, it was my most anticipated movie since Days of Future Past three years ago, and I loved every damn minute of it. Just had the stupidest, widest grin on my face the whole time. Did the humor go a bit too far at times, and would I also like to see a darker, grimmer take on that material, a la 300? Sure, but I can't argue with this much fun. Also, I suspect that Infinity War will play up the intergalactic stakes much more, so not going so goofy and un-serious in this installment might have taken some of the wind out of that one. Anyhow, on its own terms, I loved it.

Grade: A

My MCU ranking to date:
Iron Man 3
Iron Man 2
Ant-Man
The Incredible Hulk
Thor: Ragnarok
The Avengers
Thor: The Dark World
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Thor
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Captain America: Civil War
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Iron Man
Captain America: The First Avenger
Guardians of the Galaxy
Doctor Strange

(Haven't yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2)

IT 2017
The evil clown named Pennywise returns in this first look at New Line Cinema's horror thriller It, based on the classic Stephen King novel. Starring Finn Wolfhard, Javier Botet, Nicholas Hamilton, Megan Charpentier and Bill Skarsgård.

with remakes having a bad reputation i wasnt expecting much going into this, but i can easily say it was one of the better remakes out there.the clown for me wasnt scary but it wasnt the fault of bill Skarsgård it was the cgi head(at times it looked far too big for his body and sometimes stood out against the dark enviroment i.e dancing clown in flames)there are some genuine creepy moments and the young cast pull off some great performances.i hope that they can portray the demon clowns true face justice when part 2 rolls around and that they cast the right actors to portray the adults its just a shame we have to wait . well worth a watch

So the better ones are on the bottom right?

For me it's a mix up of his views  :D

  1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Amazing
  2. Captain America: Civil War - Amazing
  3. Iron Man 3 - Amazing
  4. The Avengers - Amazing
  5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 & 2 - Amazing
  6. Thor - Great
  7. Iron Man - Great
  8. Doctor Strange - Great
  9. Thor: Ragnarok - Great
  10. Avengers: Age of Ultron - Good
  11. Captain America: The First Avenger - Good
  12. Ant-Man - Good
  13. The Incredible Hulk - Good
  14. Thor: The Dark World - Good
  15. Spider-Man: Homecoming - Okay
  16. Iron Man 2 - Okay

EDIT: Just to clarify, none of these are masterpieces.

For me:

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
2. Iron Man
3. The Avengers
4. Captain America: Civil War
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
6. Spider-Man: Homecoming
7. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2
8. Thor: Ragnarok
9. Avengers: Age of Ultron
10. Ant-Man
11. The Incredible Hulk
12. Thor
13. Captain America: The First Avenger
14. Iron Man 3
15. Thor: The Dark World
16. Iron Man 2

With my top superhero films being:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Logan
3. Spider-Man 2
4. The Incredibles
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

If a Marvel movie can bring together the story of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the emotion of Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume II, the sense of humor of Thor: Ragnarok, the tight characterisation of Iron Man, the villain of Spider-Man: Homecoming and the scope of Captain America: Civil War, then I think the MCU will be able to unseat Spider-Man 2 as #3. It'll be damn difficult for them to reach the levels of TDK or Logan imo, unless they decide to let an auteur run wild with one of their properties.

Let's keep this to "2017 movies" please. Feel free to compare lists via PM.

I browsed the top grossing films of 2017 list on Wikipedia and noticed the number-5 spot is held by a Chinese film I'd never heard of called 'Wolf Warrior 2'. Looks kinda like an Expendables-Style action flick, costing $30m and taking $870m (Nice). I'm intrigued.

Anybody seen it?

I watched the most recent Planet of the Apes movie last night. I liked it. I relies less on action and bombast than it does on character and theme. It could've easily been a two hour epic action battle scene (snore), but it largely avoids action for action's sake. In many ways it's the anti-Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies in that regard. And the CGI apes are just fantastic. They really are very close to it being completely seamless. Only a few times did I notice obvious CGI in the ape characters. I'd like to see Reeves given a Star Wars movie. He focused on character and wasn't heavy handed with spelling out the deeper themes. I was watching it wondering how if the prequels could've been great in his hands.

War of the Planet of the Apes is my favourite film of the year so far, from a very good first entry (Rise) I think each installment has improved on the last and I was really pleased to see it seemingly not try and stretch to a fourth movie. I'm not saying that won't happen  but it definitely seemed to have the integrity to just concentrate on telling a complete story over its three films.  I would go as far as to say its probably the best trilogy I have seen in as much as there isn't a film in this trilogy significantly weaker than the other two (time will tell I guess... probably a bit soon to say that).  Get Out, Hacksaw Ridge, Okja and Baby Driver would probably round out my top 5 for the year as yet, theres nothing coming I'm expecting to exceed any of those now though that I know of...

I'm intrigued by that Wolf Warrior flick, the thought of an Expendables type flick doing near on a billion dollars at the box office nowadays seems like an impossibilty. I did spot that statistic the other day and assumed it was something akin to Crouching Tiger/ Hidden Dragon or Jet Li's Hero. I will be definitely be checking that out!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)

Stuff I liked: Scodelario's Carina, Bardem and the sunrise flashback, the third-act island, the trippier parts of the climactic action sequence, and the dénouement. Also, the return of series MVP Kevin McNally (Gibbs).

Stuff I disliked: the whole first hour, including the bank heist (what, are those Kryptonian horses?!), Barbossa being dragged back into the action for no good reason, Thwaites' Henry Turner (zzzzzzz), the "romance" and apology-centric "banter", and the bludgeoning excess of the third-act action set pieces that made this two-hour movie feel much longer. Also, the general shameless regurgitation of undead baddies, sniveling Brits, mystical maritime whatsits and dull white hetero lovers (and don't forget Jack's compass!) that combine to make The Force Awakens look original compared to its predecessors. And, though I love [x actor], let's not follow up on that sequel tease, either.

Conclusion: Well, it's better than the wretched, naval battle-free On Stranger Tides, and it's not as lousy as At World's End, either. Moreover, given that it's twenty minutes shorter than CotBP, I'm pretty sure it's better than that, too. In any case, it's certainly nowhere near as great as the one legitimately good entry, DMC. As for the franchise's future, novelty is sorely needed, and I for one vote for fewer men and more women. Get Keira Knightley and Penélope Cruz together on an adventure, with Scodelario along for the ride and Thwaites forgotten, and we just might have a sail worth taking. Heck, they could make Geena Davis the villain!  :D

I must disagree in the strongest possible way. CotBP remains the best of these films.

I must agree in the strongest possible way. Sounds like a splendid idea - have them search for Jack, so he's only in it for the third act.

I was looking forward to this as I was big fan of Zahler's last movie Bone Tomahawk, boy was I not prepared for that I expected a hard hitting prison drama and got a movie I would describe as The Terminator, Ransom  with a dash of the Human Centipede set in a Prison. Seriously messed up but I was glued to the screen for a probably slighly overlong 132 mins.  Vaughn was quite the revelation in this and I'm intrigued by Zahler's next project too with Vaughn and Mel Gibson

Kingsman The Golden Circle

The first was good fun and I've liked everything Matthew Vaughn has done in the past apart from the pretty awful Kick Ass 2 which I know he only produced. So to Kingsman 2, they really drove themselves up a dead end killing Firth's character off in the first movie . About a quarter of this movies considerable 140 minute length is devoted to bringing him back from the dead.  Considering all the daftness going on elsewhere it wouldn't have been a problem to do this in a single scene but alas thats not the case.  Not as bad as the critics made out but a good 20-30 minutes too long (ripe for an edit by someone methinks), there's a fun 2 hour movie in there.

^Slice down the Harry in Rehab scenes to one long sequence, remove the Halle Berry subplot which goes nowhere, remove the really REALLY over gratuitous scene and any excessive silliness. You might have a film that approaches the original in quality.

^^ the original movie came across as a serious movies with some comedy momemts but the sequel for me tried to be a comedy movie almost a parody movie like austin powers(the whole elton john subplot and haley berry plot were not needed imo and channum tatem and jeff bridges were wasted  potential)

when i first watched this i was expecting another vince vaugh comedy movie but i was blown away how much of a gritty rollarcoaster ride it was going to be.it took about 30 minutes for the movie to pick up momentum but when it did it kept going.the violence my god i did not expect that level of borderline gore, wow,and the action it was like john wick in prison. my only problem is i wish it didnt have to end the way it did ,seriously limited the potential for a sequel with vaughn's character(shame the movie didnt end with a fade to black then hear the shot.
