Tips for getting the 80’s look:
To see this in action refer to my Terminator 2 Dehanced Edition edit.
Philosophy:
Keep in mind 80’s films gravitated toward the following techniques and looks, much of which can be used or simulated in post production:
Before doing anything remove modern color grading like overuse of teal. Use multiple adjustment layers to easily reduce the amount of processing, grading applied. The tips below can be combined as needed (No LUTS applied to entire film, only processing scene by scene):
#1 Find a screenshot from a similar looking scene from an 80’s movie and use Resolve’s shot matching feature (advanced technique: take a screenshot from your movie with teal removed and use AI to convert it to an 80’s movie look, then shot match to that)
# 2 Use Filmbox plug-in (free trial version)
#3 Use Resolve’s Kodak film looks
#4 Use Resolve’s box blur but with only part of the image selected and then spread out the effect to simulate light diffusion.
#5 For credits add Gaussian blur and a little random camera movement
#6 Desaturate and de-contrast
#7 Stabilize shaky cam
#8 Advanced features of Resolve’s film grain allow different levels of grain based on highs, lows, and midtones.

Keep in mind 80’s films gravitated toward the following techniques and looks, much of which can be used or simulated in post production:
- Still, static camera
- Diffuse light
- Blue tones
- Poor color reproduction
- Low contrast
- High film grain
- Backlighting
- Fog and darkness to hide low production values
- 1.85 aspect ratio
- Slight blur, especially to credits
