Agreed, but I'd argue that's a flaw of the film, rather than an argument in favor of the Ewoks. My biggest problem with the Ewoks is that they can take out the Emperor's "best troops" with rocks and arrows. Lucas wanted a kiddie merchandising opportunity that also kicked ass and that was a major failure in my book.
Well, the best and brightest of the Emperor's troops still suck, kinda. And Imperial Stormtroopers aren't really that precise. We already know this.

Also, I think the fact that the Ewoks are tougher than they look works to their advantage. Jungle creatures outsmarting better-equipped adversaries by knowing every nook and cranny of their environment is a time-honoured trope. I see no reason why this trope shouldn't be applicable to Ewoks as well. I think people are projecting their annoyance with the Ewok design and speech patterns onto the plot. I can understand that - because he annoys me, I never really tried to take Boss Nass seriously as a character either - but I still think it's a bit unfair. Maybe it's just because I see the appeal of dangerous teddy bears.

If you'd had the exact same plot with Wookiees instead of Ewoks, no one would have complained about the plot being stupid. Mind you, I'm not really arguing for Ewoks either, but I don't get the hatred, especially since there are way bigger problems story-wise with ROTJ (the opening specifically).

In fact the only real problem I ever had with the Ewoks was not even them being in ROTJ. It was those movies made for Children made in the 80's. I saw one of them on the big screen (even if it was made for TV if I'm right), I was 9 or 10 years old and even if it looked kind of cool visualy (for that time), it was a movie for babies to me.
In france we even had a very well known TV show made for kids with a female host who sang a song about the Ewoks. It almost made me ashamed to be a Star Wars fan.

But really, in ROTJ, I think they serve their purpose fine.
They don't fight against a huge army anyway and they show them using "MacGyver tricks", and with a lot of courage (and deaths) and the help of Han & co, they did a good fight. Let's say that even if defeating blasters with rocks is not realistic, the Ewoks earned their victory anyway from a storytelling point of view.

This is great. Reminds me of Drew McWeeny's Nerd 2.0 series over at HitFix. Would love to read your kids react to the rest of the films, but sounds like it is too late for a first impression. Maybe live blog them watching the ridiculous series?

Haha that was a really fun read. It'll never cease to amaze me the stuff kids do and don't understand/care about.

How often did they say "Are those good guys or bad guys?" when watching the OT. I'm guessing not much.

Good guess.

I didn't include it, but they asked that about all the ships in the opening battle as well. I didn't have a good response, but I wanted to say "who could possibly care?"

You could have said "There are heroes on both sides. It was stylistically designed to be that way."

Mark Hamill's tweet today:

Lightsabers are red
Lightsabers are blue
By chance you find mine
Return my hand too

(Sorry no news from Episode 8, or else i'd put it in the good thread of course!)

I'm halfway through watching 'Brooklyn' and I'm kinda distracted by thinking that Emory Cohen would make a brilliant young Han Solo. He's got that scoundrel swagger and charm with a hint of Marlon Brando.
