Brief Synopsis:
This is a shortened version of the excellent 2012 film Dredd. The plot unfolds somewhat differently from the original as a result of the shortened run time.


Intention:
To simply create a fun condensed version of Dredd based on super 8 digest editing techniques. To experiment with cross-cutting. To edit and encode entirely in mono: Dredd has an excellent sound mix, I wanted to further my experiments with mono editing as a creative learning exercise. No old film effects have been added to this release despite it being inspired by super 8 digests which is why I subtitled it 'Digest Edition' instead of 'The Super 8 Cut' so there is some distinction.

Cuts and Additions:
Trims throughout.
Cut Dredd taking out the Slo-Mo heads in the van.
Cut Mama's gang taking control of the building defense systems, instead playing it as though the Computer Guy hacks it from his computer.
Cut crooked judges, this was my first editing decision. Not that I don't care for that angle of the story, but I knew it would make the second reel too dense. Cutting the crooked judges scenes forced me to be creative about how the second reel unfolds and I'm glad I did because I was then surprised at how much this movie can be re-arranged.
Cut night time city footage, it now plays out as though the events happen over the course of one day.
Cut approximately 5 scenes into a montage of Dredd and Anderson kicking ass and the Computer Guy and Mama watching in order to get a whole plot point across in under a minute.
Re-arranged and swapped many shots and parts of scenes in order to make this version flow as well as I could manage in the confines of the runtime.
Put together alternate opening and closing credits in place of the original ones.

This is a definite improvement over the original, that's for sure. By cutting the film down to about 1/3rd it's original runtime you've made it watchable for me now, although I still didn't enjoy it. But that's not your fault Rogue. I did like your new custom opening credits though. But why did you split your edit into two parts? After Anderson gets taken hostage THE END appears on the screen and the opening credits start up again and we get the rest of the edit. Was this something they did with real Digest versions of movies?

Just wondering what about the Dredd film didn't do it for you?

I split the edit in two because that's how most of the two reel super 8 digests I'v seen are. I'll admit I'm biased about the multiple credit concept and may like it more than I should, but it felt right to do them like that.
Some people used to cut out those middle credits and join the reels together sometimes.

There was no story to it. All it was was these two trying to survive so that they could get to the top of the complex and kill MaMa. I really couldn't care less if they made it or not. And the cgi was too over-the-top ridiculous. It was really distracting. Took me completely out of the movie.
 
Yes the story is pretty spartan, was it Gaith who said Anderson has more character development than Dredd, maybe it's even arguable that the Computer Guy has more character development than Dredd, lol.

I don't have any beef with the cgi, sure some of it may have been too obvious but when it was noticeable it at least seemed artful and fun.
 
The cgi shouldn't distract you though. It should be good enough to make you believe that what you're seeing is real. That close-up shot of the guy's hand and the Slo-Mo inhaler, just before the three guys are tossed off the balcony, looked as though it had been made for a video game. I agree that it was artful at times though. Like that shot just before the cgi turns off and it goes back to real world. When Dredd kills that bunch of guys after blowing up the door. There's a shot of one guy being sent backwards from the blast, and you see the two customers sitting in the background, one dead and the other with his hands in the air. That shot looked at though it was a painting. But while the art was good, it was mainly distracting because it wasn't real.

Just finished watching this. Also, coincidentally, I just recently watched Dredd for the first time and really enjoyed it.

So here is my short and (for the most part) sweet review:

Awesomeness after Anderson uses her mind games to find out Peachtree is the distrubution center for all slo mo
excellent montage of Anderson and Dredd taking MaMa's guys out (IIRC thats not the way it played out in the film/it was nt a montage in the theatrical cut).

So around 17 minutes into the edit it says "The End" and i was like wtf?! Then forgot this is a Rogue Edit and there was a second part coming up.

Here is my extremely nitpicky technical editing comment (I have to throw at least one in there :p):

Around 13:30, when Anderson is playing head games with Avon Barksdale :-D (Wood Harris, I dunno what his character name was in the movie) and the guy says "My head, do what I like", could tell something was cut, so that was just slightly awkward as it felt like there was something he said just before that which had been trimmed off.

Future project suggestion: A 7 minute Citizen Kane!

"around 13:30 - "my head do what I like", there's nothing cut here, the first cuts inside the head happens at 13:47 with a shorter version of the porn like shot (with added dust particles) and after that there's some brief added shots from NBK and Stir of Echoes, there was some dialog there removed as there were references to a scene not in the edit.

No one likes the double credit format any more :(

I haven't seen Citizen Kane in a while but even though you were probably joking I'll give 'er a go and see if a 7 min cut is doable.
