Well, I jsut got back from Casino Royale, and it was definately the best Bond I've seen. The opening title sequence was on of the best I've seen since, probably Die Another Day. The action was a bit over the top, and one scene in the begining was remincent of the Russian Climber or the Free Runner. The poker game was good, even though I didn't know what the hell was going on. Maybe if I understood poker more I would have enjoyed the game more, but the action that took place inbetween the game rounds more than made up for it (remember kids, keep a defribulator in your car). The Bond girls this time around were very sexy, however, it didn't appear that he actually, well, you know, didn't, uh, do them. We also see where Bond takes up his liking for the vodka martini, shaken, not stirred. This time around, he's clumsy. He's definately not as graceful this time around. But since this one is technically a prequel, it makes it all the more powerful. Gone are the white circles that we usually see at the begining, and the gunbarrel sequence is different, but in a good way. The opening scenes (before the credits) are in black and white, as well as a fairly whitewashed grainy look, which does add to the atmosphere.

Daniel Craig was very good, although (and maybe I'm wrong) it didn't appear that he talked as much as Bond does in the others. Judi Dench was good, and I can safely say I've never seen her so pissed, spouting out curse words like she did. The Bond girls (Eva Green and someone else) were both very good. Mads Mikkelson was also good.

It was good, my showing didn't go off as well. The projectionist sucked. Saw the "end" of the reels several times. Also, either the lense or the print was dirty. Maybe both. The screen wasn't in the best condition, either. Then again, it's an old theater, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for the screen, but there is no excuse for a bad projectionist or a dirty print or lense. The print also appeared to have a slightly high level of contrast, making it feel a bit washed out. Though not too distracting, it did take away from the experience. I blame the theater, no one else, for this.

All in all, a very good movie, although, the problems with the projector/projectionist and such, did take away from the experience. I'll ahve to go see it again at the better theater in my old hometown (not 15 - 20 minutes a way). Definately good, and definately worth seeing at least once.

5/5

EDIT: Oh yeah, I must say I am EXTREMELY envious of Mr. Craig, getting to cuddle with all those hot women :p

I didn't like it as much. I'm a traditionalist. The tradional opening should have been used. More of the classic Bond theme song should have been used. I really didn't need to see Bond torchered as he was. Why in hell did they did do his hair like they did? They should have left the hair the way they had it in the this shot:

He would have looked much more Bondish. Were they just trying to piss off the classic Bond fans with this movie? It sure seemed that way to me especially with the line about him not giving a damn wheither his Martini was shaken or stired. And his card is not poker its baccarat. I will accept his stupid mistakes becaue this was supposed to depict a rookie Bond. Fans of "License To Kill" will probably enjoy this one. But fans of Goldfinger and other classic Bond movies might not.

Craig did a pretty good job of playing Bond. I will hold judgement of his portrayal untill I see a Craig play a seasoned Bond. He is certainly not the best. No one will beat Sean Connery as Bond. But, he is not the worst either.

One last thing. I don't like the idea of depicting Bond as trying to get married women in bed. Being married means you're married. Its just not right. If a woman is already married leaver her alone, she is already spoken for. Sorry, I'm conservative about that.

really didn't need to see Bond torchered as he was.

In the original Casino Royale novel, he was tortured in the same way. This scene was faithful to the book.

I think they were trying to make him look younger.

Even Bond gets a little pissed.

And his card is not poker its baccarat.

I do believe it was a poker game in the novel, though.

Of course, I'll have to read the oringal novel to be sure, but I think some of your gripes, like the matrini and such, were in the novel, and the director was trying to be faithful.

EDIT: What did you think of the opening title song?

And his card is not poker its baccarat.

I have not read the book, but I heard the same thing about the baccarat. I really enjoyed the movie quite a bit. I think the reason they changed the card game to Texas Hold'em is due to the popular fad of Texas Hold'em currently in the US (and maybe elsewhere.) I don't know what the hell baccarat is (it may be the greatest card game ever,) but many people are into Hold'em, and I was able to enjoy the card games scenes MUCH more since I like Texas Hold'em, and I could "relate" to, and understand, the game they were playing..(run-on sentence much?)

The nut smashing scene was both painful and funny!

You *must* be female. Every guy in the theater flinched at least once during that scene.

Oh, I flinched as well, I just laughed at the whole "I have an itch...NOOOOO...to the right...you scratched my balls" business.

As far as being a female...I don't think I am. Hmmmm. Perhaps I shoud check? Let's see...1, 2..(*where is it?* THERE!)..3. All testes present and accounted for! Dudeness confirmed!

And this where the problem is. Most of the Bond movies are not faithful to the book. Does this make them bad? I don't think so. The movie Bond is a different style Bond. This does not make him worse than the book Bond. I really wish people would realise this not try force the movie Bond to be exactly like the book Bond.

they failed. They just made him look less like Bond.

I don't how pissed Bond gets. He will always want his Martinis shaken not stired

it was ok. But I wish they would have used the tradional method of begining a Bond movie.

The movie Bond is a different style Bond.

And each actor is different. Like Dr Who.

they failed. They just made him look less like Bond.

Well, many find him more faithful than the previous Bond, Brosman.

This was the faithfullest 007 movie adventure ever, and the best since 1969.

So piss off with your moore/brosnan circus tents, and move along, this is the 21st century.

Bond is back after having been dead for 38 years.

This is an absolutely fantastic set, I have the definitive collection on VHS and LD and the fact that the material was never released on DVD by Lucas always annoyed me.
When I got hold of this set I was delighted with the overall quality, with the possible exception of Classic Creatures (RotJ Bonus DVD) which, although good, seems to be of a slightly lower standard than the rest of the set.
I've come across a few transfers of the material on these discs and this set seems to have gathered the best available into a well organised and presented collection.

A highly recommended release from RowMan who has done a superb job here.
