Fanedit Name: Exit to Eden: The "Things Are Not Looking So Rosie" Edition
Faneditor Name: slark
Tagline: All of Dana - NONE of Rosie!
Original Movie Title: Exit to Eden
Genre: Comedy, Drama
Fanedit Type: FanFix

Original Release Date: 1994
Original Running Time: 113
Fanedit Release Date: January 2013
Fanedit Running Time (Min): 70
Time Cut (Min): 43

Brief Synopsis:

This edit eliminates the two policemen from the plot and brings it more into line with the original Anne Rice novel.

Intention:
To create a film that concentrates on the relationship between Mistress Lisa and Elliot, and so is much truer to the original story.

(Actually, that's a complete whitewash of my intention. I just wanted to cut Rosie O'Donnell out of the movie. The fact that it wound up bringing the plot closer to the original novel was just a happy accident.)

Additional Notes:
After taking YEARS to complete my last edit, I was looking for a project I could complete in a short time. I hit upon the idea of editing Rosie O'Donnell out of this film, and it seemed like something that wouldn't take long to do. At the time of this writing, this film has an IMDb rating of only 3.8. This low rating reflects several complaints that people have with this movie: that it takes too many liberties with Anne Rice's original story, that its juxtaposition of comedy and drama is awkward, and that you have to endure the sight of Rosie O'Donnell in leather (traumatic to some, I guess) in order to see Dana Delany in all her glory. This edit attempts to address those issues. If you're looking for a G-rated film, look elsewhere; if you're looking for an NC-17, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a serious examination of alternate lifestyles, get real: even with Rosie and Aykroyd gone, this is still very much a Garry Marshall film - an R-rated "Love, American Style" episode titled "Love and the Dominatrix". (Remember Marshall's treatment of the oldest profession? "Love and the Pretty Woman"? Okay then, you got the idea...)

Editing Details:
I used AviSynth/VirtualDub as I had with my earlier edit(s). The trickiest part of this edit was the removal of some of the voiceovers. Some of it was accomplished by actually removing the footage that contained the voiceovers, but some was done by laying the raw soundtrack back over the film.

Cuts and Additions:
Gone are Rosie O's voiceovers, and any significant scenes of hers; you might spot her here and there in the film, but she's barely noticeable, and her own voice is only heard ONCE (when she's seen from the back). Likewise, Dan Aykroyd is reduced to a non-speaking cameo.

The "diamond smugglers" subplot is still there, but it is not nearly as intrusive; it serves a couple of important roles in the story, so it had to stay for the sake of continuity. So, relax Iman fans: she's still in the picture.

Other Sources:
Thanks to Varese Sarabande for releasing the original soundtrack. It helped in spots to allow me to remove Rosie's voiceovers.

Can't wait to see it. And agreed - Rosie O'Donnell was the worse idea for this movie. Fun factoid: I read that 9 months after production they needed to do some re-shoots. But by then, Rosie had gained back 40 pounds and they needed to re-make her leather outfit and even then, use only "selective" angles. hahahahahhahaha
