The future of Fanedit.org
#31
The only trouble will be getting access to older edits that an editor may not have anymore or where the editor has left the community. This is where individuals' personal collections come into great prominence. Me, I know that ever since MU went tits up, I've been getting every fanedit I can legally get. I thank those of the community who have been filling in the gaps from their own collections. I've got a 1.5 TB external that is devoted exclusively to archiving as much as I can. JDown has been grabbing from RS non-stop (at 30 KB/s). We're going to a more decentralized paradigm, much as the Trek community used to trade fanzines through mimeograph and snail mail before the internet. We still have the internet, so it'll be easy for the flow of data, but we actually have to talk to each other and ask now instead of just getting a posted link to click. I realize some of our members may lack these basic social skills (I jest, I jest), but I don't think we're in too bad a shape going forward.

Quote:I haven't been the most vocal guy in the forums (something I've tried to do more of in recent months) but it's always easy to get info or fire off a PM to the faneditor and guess what they will pretty much always answer back... If anything I think this change will engage people to become more involved...

And particularly I like to see this comment ^.

Quote:The only negative I see in all of this (for me atleast) is where the cover art will be hosted moving forward (as it is currently just a click away) but I can only assume it will be just as easy to get that as well if it isn't included in the "links" provided by the faneditor...

Cover art will continue to be available via listings. Smile

Sounds about the same to me, discussions and ideas in the forums along with any other thoughts & opinions, and dlc's off info or whatever will replace info. And the in the works workprints directly to your/my inbox for reviewing.

I think he's referring to the fact that it's missing from the main page. Not the tab on top, but on the right side where it used to be.
