The future of Fanedit.org
#1
As you may have noticed, there have been a few changes around fanedit.org recently. So you may say to yourself, “this is not my beautiful wife”... actually, probably not unless your David Byrne, but you may be saying to yourself, “what in tarnation is going on around here?”

Well, outside of wondering who actually uses the word tarnation, what is going on, is that Fanedit.org is having a moment of clarity. Those familiar with the long history of the site will recall that there was once a time where org allowed direct links on the site. Then several years ago after some hullabaloo the site went away for a few days. When the site returned the links were removed, but there was a new site where said links could still be obtained. The focus of fanedit.org was primarily for the discussion of fanediting.

This split was a wise choice on the part of the staff at that time, however it was never fully implemented and the two sites continued to seem linked. After a lot of contemplation by the current staff it has been decided that this shift in site-focus will be brought to full implementation and as of this point moving forward, Fanedit.org will be a site which is dedicated solely to the discussion and support of the art of Fanediting. The site will no longer have any affiliation, nor provide guidance on where fans of fanedits may download edits.

What does this mean for you? Largely this change has minimal impact. The overall site and forum will continue essentially as they have before, with news articles about recent releases and fanediting news, the forum will largely remain as it is with threads for existing released edits and in-the-works projects, but all links and references to any site which may have download links have been eliminated from this site. Editors are completely in control of how their edits are made available and this site will not be a part of any process for uploading or downloading fanedits.

Fanedit.org will remain a thriving supportive community where faneditors and fans of fanedits come together to discuss existing edits, planned edits, the general craft of editing, and all of the stuff in-between. The site shall continue to maintain a database of known edits that meet the exacting quality levels that fanedit.org has become known for.

There are many improvements still in store for the site including a revamped database of fanedits , a new approval process and a few other smaller tweaks and nudges. The staff is excited about these changes and feel that this new focus of the site will also expand our horizons.

By focusing strictly on discussion of fanedits, the variety and scope of edits which can be listed has increased. Where the old site had to have rules about ‘degrees’ of modification, this new focus allows a wider range of edits to exist on the site for discussion. Of course, the same rules always apply; edits listed on org must comply with guidelines of using legally obtained sources. Edits which are known to contain pirated media are still prohibited. Fanedit.org has never supported piracy and will always encourage the respectful purchase of copyrighted materials.

Over the next week you may see further clarifications being posted, in particular the FAQ section will be updated to reflect our new focus and to address possible questions which will certainly arise.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we realign the focus of the site and are excited about the improvements we have in the pipeline. These improvements should enhance the community’s ability to enjoy, discuss and discover the unique art form that is fanediting.

Does this mean if someone is interested in watching an edit now, they just PM the editor for the links? No more sending .dlc files then to an administrator anymore I take it?! Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. ;-)

Wow. It actually sounds like a very tough decision to me, although ultimately it's probably an extremely wise choice.

Will there still be monthly rating of fan edits? It seems like it will be harder to rate a Fan Edit of the Month if the fan edits aren't widely available.

Will there even still be a listing of said fan edits where we can rate the edits on a scale from 0 to 10?

Whatever you all decide, I stand behind your decision. You have to do what you think is best.

Yes. Ratings is an integral part of the community. This isn't going anywhere.

Yes, but this is going to be receiving a massive overhaul. (We've been promising this for nearly two years, but its actually on the move now.)
