Nice vids bionicbob, and I raise you these -

I was a big fan of TOS when I was younger, and still like to re-watch some episodes of it every few years or so for a bit of nostalgia.  However, it's been a long time since I watched ALL 3 season episodes - the last time being when I checked out all the 'remastered' versions when they were first released.

So for this 50th anniversary year of the show, I've decided to attempt to get through it all once again starting this week (by trying to watch at least 2 episodes per week), and follow that up with each of the TOS movies after that - ending with 'THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY', rather than with 'GENERATIONS'!  (unless I've managed to do my long-intended re-edit by then  :D  see the vid in the 1st post of my 'signature' link below concerning that)

But 3 things have changed since I last watched the 'remastered' episodes -

1.  While I initially thought that those were the only versions I'd ever want to view again, I've now decided that I'm only going to re-watch the actual original versions (on blu-ray)  this time around...as I've come to realise that I prefer the look (and the composition) of many of the earlier FX shots, compared to some of the new 'remastered' versions - especially during 'THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE' episode, which was always one of my favourites.  That, and the fact that certain older effects were not re-done at all, and I just think that I'll stick to the overall '60's aethetic' for the whole duration of the show, for a less-jarring continuity between the FX and the live-action shots overall.

(Yes, I'll miss out on the greatly improved 'Earth' shots for the 'TOMORROW IS YESTERDAY' episode for instance, but I can live with that for the sake of sticking to the 'classic' look overall)

2.  Something else which may sound a little contentious to some, is the fact that I now prefer to watch the TOS show in a 'psuedo widescreen' manner on my 16:9 TV screen...rather than the existing 4:3 aspect ratio.  'Sacrilege!' some might think, and I used to think that as well...but having wanted a more 'cinematic', widescreen look to the show for a long time, I've adjusted to slightly 'stretching out' the whole 4:3 picture frame to fill out my screen instead.  And as far as I'm concerned, it adds extra impact seeing it visuals this way on my set, even allowing for the slight distortion.

(Note: I'm talking about using a 'FULL' setting which keeps the WHOLE picture frame onscreen, albeit in a slightly 'stretched' way horizontally to give it a 16:9 aspect...and not some other overly-ZOOMED' setting which ends up 'actually cutting off' some of the original picture)

Thing is, after getting used to this particular way of viewing the show, when I tried reverting back to the normal 4:3 aspect on my screen, I found I disliked it's 'squarer' image and large black side bars even more than I remembered.  It's not a 'true' widescreen image I know, but everything still looks great overall I reckon, and I'm certainly sticking with it.

3.  The other thing that's changed since I last watched the show, is that I refuse to begin with the 'monster-on-the-loose' episode 'THE MAN TRAP' which the NBC executives started off with all those years ago.

Instead, I'm gonna kick things off with the 1st 'pilot' episode 'THE CAGE' (which I absolutely love)  for this particular re-watch, no matter what - and then follow that up with the 2nd intended 'pilot' episode 'WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE' (which is another great episode), before continuing on with the rest...and then by the time that 'THE MENAGERIE, PART I' & 'THE MENAGERIE, PART II' episodes come around, there will be enough distance between those and 'THE CAGE' episode for me to happily re-watch the chopped-up footage in it's altered format at this point in my viewing order. :)

That's what I was expecting from my memory and the general consensus but I thought S1 was actually top-notch story/plot wise. I think I  loved every episode. It's got other structural problems of course like having no fixed chief engineer and no Ten-Forward.

Dr Pulaski doesn't help matters in S2 "I know, let's make our new character Dr Pulaski constantly be a d*ck to everyone's favourite character Data. That'll make her really endearing to the viewers!". Being mean to Data is like punching a kitten, since he doesn't fully understand and is too polite to object. The bit where she is calling Data "Dah-tah" instead of "Day-tah" really made me hate her all over again. I can't wait to get to S3E1 and have Beverley Crusher back.

For me, the only thing that makes most of seasons one and two watchable is the fantastic chemistry of the cast.  Otherwise, the vast majority of episodes suffer from poor scripts, badly executed bad ideas and just a lack of consistent vision or tone.  It's funny, when TNG first started airing while I was in college, we all filled the tv rec room to watch every week and thought it was the greatest thing ever... LOL.   But now, when one considers the GIGANTIC leap in improved storytelling quality from season two to season three, the first two seasons have aged very poorly imo.

The fews eps I still enjoy from those early seasons are:

Season one--
1. Conspiracy -- hands down my fave ep of season one, its a shame it was never followed up on.
2. Datalore -- though I probably only enjoy this for the myth building than the execution, since it is very predictable
3. The Battle -- a great Picard episode

Season two--
1. Q Who -- the intro of the Borg was mind-blowing at the time!
2. Measure of the Man -- classic Trek!
3. Schizoid Man -- another solid Data episode, but what I really loved was Dr. Selar!!!  If they had replaced Crusher with Selar instead of Pulaski, that would have made things much more interesting.

...and thats about it.  There a couple other eps I find mildly enjoyable, but these are the only ones that jump immediately to mind as "great" episodes.  :p

I really like TNG S2's "The Royale", even with that dumb line about a "negative Celsius" temperature. The idea of being trapped alone in an endlessly repeating trashy novel is just so creepy-cool...

I haven't seen it but what's wrong with the idea of negative Celsius temperature? If the line was dumb for another reason then forgive my intrusion.

Edit: Oof, looked it up. They really say -291 Celsius? That seems like a silly slip.

FYI ST-fans: Olly and Richard just uploaded a new commentary for ST:The Motion Picture (Theatrical Cut Blu-Ray)...

This should be a giggle, I'm syncing it up now  :) . They plan on doing the other movies (1-6) too.

I can look the other way for stuff like that, suspend my disbelief.  I draw the line at Data's description of a completely clean skeleton as, "Not being in a state of advanced decomposition."  There.... there's no skin.  Decomposition is complete!

Fun episode, though.  Always have a soft spot for that sort of thing.  Any time Data gets to gamble's gold in my book.

Just got done watching TNG S5Ep25 "The Inner Light" again. Words can't adequately express how much this episode means to me personally and how perfect of a production it is.  If anyone has missed out on this gem, I'd highly recommend it.

After watching a few Star Trek fan films of TOS, I have come up with what the Enterpries 5 year mission is.

Year 1: TOS season 1

Year 2: TOS season 2

Year 3: TOS season 3

Year 4: Star Trek Continues

Year 5: Star Trek The New Voyages

Yeah, came to that conclusion already.

When I watch these in order between the show and the films, I'm going to pretend ST Continues is year 4 and ST Phase 2 is year 5 (unless they literally say otherwise in the episodes).

Though some hard core fans have argued that is it clear in the second pilot "Where No Man Has Gone Before" that the Enterprise is already deep into its 5 Year Mission and that there is big gap between the pilot and "Man Trap", leading many to speculate that the first season may actually be Year TWO of the mission.  And if you want to accept the Animated Series as canon, is Year Five.   :D

But I am with you guys, Star Trek Phase II/NV is pretty much canon in my mind.  Love that series.  Still sorry Cawley decided step down as Kirk and shut down the show.

Why do you guys put Continues before Phase II?

Because the first "Star Trek Continues" vignette starts exactly where the last episode of the original series left off, and all of the episodes and vignettes are made with a meticulous approximation of the original series' look, feel, and sound. It basically continues (as its title would suggest) the original series, as if it had never stopped being made.

"Star Trek: Phase II/New Voyages", on the other hand, is set a little later in the timeline, and is less of a direct continuation of the original series than a sequel to it.

What were you doing on this date back it in 1987????

Were huddled around your 4x8 television screen, frantically searching the channels for the SYNDICATED premiere of this little show....

Seeing the final video there, I had thoughts of ST:TNG Season 8 edit intro. If the maker of the model would do some hi res pass video the intro scenes would just *pop*
