ST - Star Trek

DS9 = big disappointment for this Trekker. TOS is fine, but I was raised on TNG. Picard is my captain!
I enjoyed Voyager although it was a lot of fluff - but it was fun fluff. DS9 was booooring as all that - except for season 5. Wow. Possibly one of the best seasons of Trek. Season 6 was a bit meh. And 7 I have yet to watch.
I surprised you guys think it was the best realised? It felt horribly muddled to me in seasons 1&2, even most of 3, with poor, single-thread stories that felt like cast-offs from TNG. Nobody seemed to have any type of character, particularly poor old Kira who just became anything the plot decided she needed to be. Ugh.
When TNG finished and they could focus everything on DS9 it jumped in quality. Suddenly we had the multi-threaded stories we were used to from TNG, the characters were more settled, and the whole thing had an identity. I mean, even the theme song became better (the original was sooo bad). I wasn't surprised to hear it nearly got cancelled, and Ronald D Moore and Ira Behr had to change quite few things (like introducing Worf!) to save it. Season 4 & 5 are pretty good (they left the station and got in a ship....).

I have said it in the past and I say it again, DEEP SPACE NINE, was best Trek series after TOS.
But I know I am in the minority,

I'm not sure you're in the minority. Yes, a lot of people prefer TOS or TNG, but I don't know anyone who would stare at you funny for saying that, not like if you said that Voyager or Enterprise were your favorites. :)

I have a copy of the terrific Sci-Fi Universe magazine from 1996, where the amazing Mark Altman counted down his choices for the top 100 Star Treks of all time, in time for the (then) 30th anniversary. He said that DS9 was by far the best of all the Treks.

Then I got a copy of Cinefantastique magazine from '99, just after the show went off the air, which had an episode guide. The cover read: "Deep Space Nine: Behind the Scenes of the Greatest Star Trek of All Time."

And then I had a friend who recently watched every Trek series and movie over the past 2 or 3 years, and when he was all done, he said that DS9 was by far his favorite.

So I know that's not a definitive ranking by every Trek fan, but that's two prestigious magazines being willing to make that assertion without expecting much controversy, plus a personal story of a friend who says that it holds up.

As for me, I'm not enough of a Trekspert to really have an opinion. I like Trek, and I like DS9, but I've hardly seen everything. At any rate, I guess my point is that I've long thought that general consensus was that DS9 was the best Trek. Whether I was accurate or not, I can definitely say that there are others who share your sentiment. :)

i'm having a slow night at work so i fired up the netflix account and gave DS9 a spin.

please forgive my lack of star trek knowledge. so far, it seems like the good guys have a problem with the kardashians.

For what it's worth, TNG is my favorite series and I hated DS9 when I first watched and I stopped after the first season but I rewatched it years later and really enjoyed it once the Dominion War gets going.

Most fans of DS9 find seasons one and two to be slow or I believe the word commonly used is "boring"... lol. While I agree season one in particular is a very mixed bag as the writers figure out what works and what doesn't, it is loaded with fantastic character development and plants the seeds for many future story lines that will shape the series for the next 6 seasons.

My best of / favourite list for seasons one and two:
--EMISSARY - the pilot movie is fantastic! All the characters get a good intro/set-up, Sisko's arc dealing with is wife's death is emotionally powerful and his discussions with the Prophets nicely sum up the Roddenberry Trek philosophy.
Though the pilot does conflict with the season 7 reveal that the Prophets actually manipulated Sisko's birth. I have always wanted to do a fan edit of the pilot that retrocons this story element.

--PAST PROLOGUE and PROGRESS , great Kira stories. I am a huge fan of the Bajor stories.... the explorations of freedom fighter vs terrorist, religion vs science, living with past sins and finding forgiveness, the classic mythological elements of Prophets and the Emissary... Plus, Brian Keith is amazing in his guest role in Progress.

--MAN ALONE, VORTEX, CAPTIVE PURSUIT, and DAX are all great character explorations of Odo, Obrien and Jadzia.

--NAGUS -- while the Ferengi stories are by far my least favourite, anything with Wallance Shaw is a fan watch.

--BATTLE LINES, DUET and IN THE HANDS OF THE PROPHETS, all are strong stories and are key to future arcs.

season two:

--THE HOMECOMING, THE CIRCLE AND THE SEIGE, this 3 part season opener is absolutely fantastic and a definite MUST WATCH.

--INVASIVE PROCEDURES and PLAYING GOD as being totally in love with Jadzia, any stories that explore her character and Trill society I find fascinating, but it may not be for everyone

--NECESSARY EVIL filled with essential backstory about the station, Odo and Kira

--SANCTUARY and THE COLLABORATOR-- two powerful Bajor stories, definite must watch!

--THE ALTERNATE-- great Odo story

--ARMAGEDDON GAME, I love this episode as it the birth of the Obrien/Bashir bromance, one of great elements of the series.

--WHISPERS, I love this one too, another great Obrien story with a good twist last act.

--BLOOD OATH, if you are a TOS fan, a definite must watch as KANG, KOR and KOLOTH all return!!!!

--THE MAQUIS, an incredible two parter that explores the Maquis in a way Voyager should have but never did.

--THE WIRE, any story that explores Garek is worth watching. Andy Robinson steals every scene he is in!!

--CROSSOVER -- a sequel to TOS "Mirror, Mirror" it is beyond fantastic. DS9 would go on to do several more Mirror Universe sequels, some good, some bad, but none equal to this first one.

--TRIBUAL, another great torture poor Obrien story. Connects nicely to TNG's Chains of Command too.

--THE JEM'HADAR, a pivotal game changer episode that will affect everything that comes afterwards.

To be fair, I think the same could be said (if to slightly less of a degree) about TNG.

Bajor is the only fictional place in which I would quite like to live. I'm not quite sure why this is. There's something about the way in which the show depicts the planet – the sound of the language, the architecture, the folklore, and so on – that I've always found appealing.

I find it intriguing that I should have this reaction to one small part of one fictional universe but not to any part of any any other. That's why I set Bajor as my location. (It doesn't really have anything to do with the fact that the image in my avatar is from Star Trek, although it does happen to work quite well.)

I would argue seasons one and two of DS9 are light years superior to TNG, which I now find almost completely unwatchable with the exception of a very small handful of episodes. DS9 co-creator Michael Piller (who saved TNG imo by becoming the TNG show runner by it's 3rd season) always tried to keep most of the episodes character driven rather than plot focused, which for me, makes the show more engaging. :)

Are you saying that the first two seasons of DS9 are better than the first two seasons of TNG? I can agree to that since I just find the beginning of DS9 to be dull while the beginning of TNG is just plain bad. I also agree that Michael Piller (along with Ron Moore and Ira Steven Behr) was what brought Star Trek up to its potential with both TNG and DS9. The first two seasons of Voyager that he was involved with weren't bad, either.

^ Wow that was like font and graphic-design pornography :-D.

Thought this was kind of cool....

It certainly is. There are some images there that could be used to good effect in custom credits.

No credit for DeForest? Tsk, tsk.:-(

Trailer for Star Trek Beyond

Definitely feels different already without JJ directing. I'm a fan of the new movies, so I'm sure I'll like this one as well.

hhhmmmmmm......

More Beastie Boys... sigh...

Did they just destroy the Enterprise? Maybe replace it in the last scene with something closer to the classic TMP version?

New uniforms look nice.

Lots of humour and action, but Pegg promises it will also have more traditional Trek elements too.

Motorcycle?

Is that Earth under attack?

Did I miss Elba?

No real context to judge anything but I do like Lin as a director, he knows how to balance extreme action with solid emotional beats... so I remain optimistic and look forward to the next trailer that will hopefully reveal some story elements. :)

I definitely was not a fan of this trailer. I'd like to see and know more before making any calls on this, but this trailer felt very different and not in a good way. I wasn't a fan of Into Darkness but loved the first NuTrek. Hope to see some footage with Idris Elba.

"Let's never do that again" Well said that man.
