Fascinating! While I'm truly thankful that TOS was released OAR, the case for a 16:9 release was surprisingly strong. Obviously, not every shot would look as good as the ones above, but the potential for reframing is considerable.

^ Did you read the link, hombre? Those aren't simple crops; they're pieced-together collages of shots where the camera panned from a fixed point. Judging by the number of close-ups the show employed on any ol' random screencap page, I'm pretty sure any artificial video cropping would be disastrous. ;)

I said reframing because there are more ways to reframe than just to crop. To clarify, I doubt that it's possible to give TOS as wide a ratio as is seen in those images, and that kind of technique would not work for many scenes for anything beyond a static image. However, I'm fairly sure that the show could look very good in widescreen. This post makes for interesting reading. There's also the fact that the new CGI shots were made in widescreen to consider.

Same technique is being used in the new Lost In Space HD transfers, which really look amazing.

The reframing works relatively well for the most part, though I can understand people complaining about it.

Some more faux widescreen! Not as eye-popping as the previous set, but, oh well...

As many of you know, I am a big fan of Shatner's FINAL FRONTIER despite its many flaws.

For years I have been following a fan project over on the Captain Kirk Page called The Enhanced Re-edit. (http://www.thecaptainkirkpage.com/trek5se.html ) This project is very hard to find any current information on. The last posting I can find was over a year ago on the Trek BBS stating the project was complete and being shown to Shatner and Paramount. Since then there has been silence. Though rumours continue to circulate that Paramount may be releasing some sort of Directors Cut with the 50th Aniversary in 2016.

Anyway, the other day while doing a random check for updates on this project, I stumbled across a similar themed fan edit being done by the guys who run DIGITAL FAN EDITS. Now I have never watched any projects from their site and really do not know too much about the group, but their Facebook page for the project -- entitled BEYOND THE BARRIER -- looks... well for the lack of a better word... fascinating.

They have posted several clips and they look very impressive. The project looks very exciting.
Out of curiosity, is anyone here a member of Digital Fan Edits?

Hopefully it turns out good. (Assuming we'll ever get to see it.)

I was also following that other earlier edit. I've wanted to edit ST5 for a long time, but the effects replacements are a must and far beyond what I can do. :(

I love this part:

"MAJOR UPDATE: The project has been screened by William Shatner! He stated, 'Your edit is now my edit.'
A few further tweaks are being made before release to the general public."

That warms my heart. I would love to see more fan edits get the blessing from the filmmakers (and even possibly an official release!) like this.

I was once a member. The site operator and approximately 1/3 of the membership are all one fellow by the name of Anti-Matter, a former originaltrilogy.com member who blew up at everyone in a huge temper tantrum and created his own site, complete with himself reviewing his own edits under other names with ridiculously high praise. Now that's not to say the guy has no talent, but he certainly has personality issues. Any individual thought and you get banned. He and his few followers regularly read at originaltrilogy.com for any criticism leveled at them, at which point they issue bans and anyone outspoken.

Now while I use a bit of hyperbole, it really is only a bit. It's a very strange culture over at that site, and for the reasons mentioned above, I am merely a former member, though I had only joined in order to do some spying. Ask TV's Frink about his experiences there.

As for the edit itself, it could be wonderful. I hope it turns out well.

(For your reference: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/to...-About-Star-Wars-Prologue-On-DVD/post/521741/)

Considering many other wild claims made by that site, I doubt William Shatner has seen this edit. He can't even make any changes because Paramount owns the movie. I smell bull poo.
