There's some rumors making the circuit of a potential Matrix reboot.  Normally, I'd be upset by this sort of thing - I'll usually favor a distant sequel or expansion of the universe versus starting fresh ... but if this gives me material to crank out additional Robots vs Kung Fu sequels, I'm on board.

So it isn't a reboot.  What's with movie journalism using the term "reboot" to cover sequels, prequels, spinoffs, and everything else that are not continuity reboots?

^ The word "reboot" both sounds better and looks cooler (those double Os between the B and T are like eyes!), and is more widely applicable than, more specific terms, as it can mean both a from-scratch restart of a franchise (Casino Royale) and a revival of a dormant one (Tron Legacy).

The new Disney Beauty and the Beast is 45 minutes longer than the original?! Okay, five of those are probably CG animators' credits, and I get wanting to pump the story past 90 (not counting the end credits), so people feel they've gotten their money's worth, but still, that's a... beast of an expansion. (Sorry.)

Summonez les fan editors! :p

FYI: BFI-Player (From the British film Institute) is now offering a Netflix style subscription service (BFI PLAYER+) with the usual one-month free trial.

I've just signed up for the free month. You get 300 free films but it's not the rubbish subscription services usually include to make up the numbers. For example you can watch 28 out of the Sight and Sound 'Greatest 100 films ever made Poll' on the free service. You also have access to more films for a price (e.g. you get 20 more films from the S&S poll) but it seems like half the price you'd pay on Amazon. On the downside I'm seeing quite a few films in SD, when they should be HD, however I'm also seeing famous films in HD that are not available in HD anywhere else.

I don't know if it's available to international viewers (or just Brits) but it's a worth a try as this a sh*t ton of great stuff for free (for a month).

Welp, I'm convinced: Stargate is definitely a movie that exists. And... apparently it's a pretty awful one.

^ Any film with that David Arnold score is a masterpiece by default.

You gotta admire the balls of the people that designed this dvd boxset...

I hope you're joking. I've always considered it to be one of the better sci-fi movies. Sure it's a bit cheesy, but it was mind blowing at the time of its release and still looks good today.

Stargate's pretty fun and the soundtrack is fantastic. I never watched any of the shows of it though.

Perhaps this is an unwelcome thought on this site of all places, but man, Star Wars has only been back in pop culture for a couple years and I'm already sick of seeing it everywhere.

This thread got me thinking about Stargate and how if they had tweaked the scientist character, they could have easily turned it into a modern day Indiana Jones type movie. It probably would have been a lot more fun that way. It's a nice adventure but the tone is a little too serious with Kurt Russell in stoic mode and all.

Not at all. A team of humans waltzes through a Stargate for no particular reason, encounters a few tribal humans, and, eighty minutes in, meets an alien who's been alive for thousands of years, yet doesn't appear to be doing anything of interest, and then they fight a bit because the movie needs gunplay to secure its financing in the first place? And from the retrospective, it looks visually drab and dull, without a fraction of the production design appeal of, say, The Fifth Element. No wonder Ebert gave it a one-star review. ;)

Well this is an odd turn of events for Disney. Pirates stealing Pirates 5 and holding it for ransom. Forbes has posted an article too.

The Pirates franchise's glorification of pirates, while conspicuously avoiding ever showing them committing any actual acts of piracy, has been a weird feature of the series from the start. To my mind, that contradiction is a big part of why Dead Man's Chest is its only good movie to date, as the soul-sucking, pirate of spirits Davy Jones is the only satisfying, hissable villain in the bunch. Heck, even Blackbeard in On Stranger Tides was mainly trying to merely stay alive - an unpleasant circumstance, sure, but hardly a devilish plot of nefariousness. Here's hoping this fifth entry gives us a proper baddie from Bardem.

Interesting. I always lumped The Fifth Element in with the likes of Wing Commander, production wise. The Fifth Element always felt like I was watching robots and animatronics. It was a little too "out there" for its own good for me. Now Gaith, for someone that has Ardeth from the Mummy movies as his avatar, I'm kind of shocked that a) you seem to be knocking down an egyptian-esque movie and b) you're worried about the storyline. :p

Well I suppose this response to my original comment meets the "random" response criteria :p

1) Are you implying The Mummy '99 isn't a modern masterpiece of popcorn cinema, and that its fan edit sequel Year of the Scorpion isn't a delightful romp? You seem to be, but that would be crazy talk; so, I am confused. ;)

2) Egypt-flavored archaeology adventure and modern sci-fi action are like beef stew and strawberry milkshake: two great tastes that don't blend very well. (See: Raider, Tomb.) Once plastics, batteries, automatic weapons and computers become commonplace, the whole mystique of creeping through ancient, long-lost caverns severely diminishes. Nor am I much fond of the whole Ancient Astronauts trope. But, even given these failures to appeal to me personally, the movie itself sounds objectively poor, and the clips featured in the video look drab and lifeless. This space alien has been living relatively undisturbed for thousands of years, and all he has to show for it is a lone pyramid in the middle of nowhere? The Pharaoh in The Mummy's prologue had a far grander empire centered around the Nile!

Gaith, you sure seem to be hating a lot on the movie for never having seen it. I think you're just afraid you might enjoy it and then :gasp: you'll disagree with Ebert and agree with everybody else here saying it was pretty fun.

Also, one time I had a beef stew MRE and the included strawberry milkshake. I threw up about 45 minutes later.

I think the notion of Ancient Aliens is rather insulting in reality, but makes for a great fiction premise. Hence, I really enjoy the ilk of HP Lovecraft, and movies like Fifth Element, Stargate, Prometheus, etc.

I noticed that my local multiplex isn't even offering 3D screenings of 'Wonder Woman' and POTC5 only had a token 2 screenings that are not in 2D (out of 12). Finally, I think 3D's long-predicted reign of terror is coming to an end :D .
