What is the Digital Economy Bill?
I googled it but what is the gist of it? How restrictive is it? What kind of penalties are involved?

If you guys seriously move out, I think Canada is a better choice than the U.S.

Canada seems to be more wishy/washy and less concerned when it comes protecting corporate profits.
US has the Digital Millennium Copyright Act but I don't think Canada has a similar law.

I did more searching and it seems that Canada is being pressured to have something like the U.S.'s DMCA but Canada doesn't seem to give a shit.

Some info from the Toronto Star
"For the past 15 years, Canada has been included on the watch list of countries the U.S. believes need reforms."

But surprisingly, Microsoft, Google, T-Mobile, Fujitsu, AMD, eBay, Intuit, Oracle and Yahoo, members of Computer and Communications Industry Association, actually DEFEND Canada's current laws.

CCIA says, "Canada's current copyright law and practice clearly satisfy the statutory adequate and effective standard. Indeed, in a number respects, Canada's laws are more protective of creators than those of the United States."

There is much more info at the author's website - http://www.michaelgeist.ca/

Also, I think the U.S. spies on it's citizens way too much :p

It is basically legislation that enables indiscriminate internet restrictions. Sort of a blanket bill where intentions are loosely defined so
any action can be taken, such as blocking your home internet access to shutting down offending websites, possibly ones that could embarrass the Government. This is why the bill has been pushed through without detailed examination because the huge corporations have their sticky finger prints all over it.

Our UK battle is lost with Murdoch/Sky praising the bill they helped create, in America, Comcast is close to controlling the internet with the latest federal appeals court ruling going their way. Two years ago, the FCC ruled that Comcast could not block online content, and Comcast challenged the ruling in court.

Orwell is alive and well.

I agree, Canada is probably a better destination for now. But my wife is from Virginia in the US and we got offered a place to live rent free by a member of her family, so we are going to take it. I will miss many things about England, but I am ready to leave.

yeah, just a bit. funny how you want to leave the UK while I talk (mostly in my head) about wanting to leave the US. I guess we are all unhappy w/ how our governments are running things.

let me rehearse.... Oh Canada....

Actually, the U.K probably spies alot more than the U.S.
I can't believe how many cameras are over there watching EVERYTHING.

I think the school's over there require some kind of scanning of the students?

Ah I found it:
"Face scanners to speed up pupil registration and queues for lunches were helping to create a Big Brother regime in schools, it was claimed yesterday.
Infra-red recognition systems - similar to those introduced at passport controls - are able to scan children's faces as they approach the school entrance.
They can also recognise them as they buy dinners or borrow library books"

Inconceivable!

Well its not quite THAT big brother yet, I work in a specialist science school that has just been completely rebuilt specifically for science and advanced learning. suffice to say we have all the new kit but facial recognition is not one of them im afraid. we do have door passes that you have to use to get into ANY room in the school (both teachers and students) and its also a cashless environment which means you have to load money onto your card if you want to be able to buy dinner.

still the Uk has more CCTV cameras per person than just about any other country you care to mention.

Well folks, I guess I'm a damn hypocrite. :p

I was going to wait to do this till later when additional material was suppose to appear, but since those materials are now seemingly never gonna be released, I just have to say "screw it" and work with what I have.

If it doesn't work, then I'll give up and never touch this thing again. :|
If it does works, then I'll be fairly satisfied. :)
