Audio Format: Dolby Digital 2.0
Size: 4.26 GB's

Intention for this fanedit: To make a funny movie even funnier.
Way to achieve intention: By re-inserting as many funny deleted scenes as possible.

Hardware and software information :

Ripping: AnyDVD
Audio Editing: DVD Audio Extractor, BeSweet, TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 and DVD-Lab Pro 2
Editing & Authoring: TMPGEnc DVD Author 3
Color Correction: TMPGEnc 4.0 Xpress and Sony Vegas
Artwork: Adobe Photoshop

Additional Comment:

The deleted scenes had to be color corrected to match the rest of the film. It was impossible to get a perfect match but Elbarto1 got them as close as he could. The "OMG! With Brandon St. Randy" deleted scene was added after the end credits but before the Weinstein logo.

Time needed for the edition: A month, off and on.
persons involved: Me and Elbarto1 but a big thanks goes out to Tranzor for supplying me with his BeSweet folder.

And here's the artwork for it, created by Elbarto1.

Nice one on completing FC.

I'll try and give this one a go.

Note - While I was a minor participant in the creation of this edit, I dont let that cloud my view when reviewing it. As always, I mean no disrespect and only offer constructive criticism of what I see. :)

The edit:
Zach and Miri: Extended Workprint Edition is a very nice extended edition. By inserting 20 minutes of deleted scenes we get an already funny movie made funnier.

While Frantic Canadian and I worked on color correcting the scenes they still stick out like a sore thumb and is the reason why this is listed as a "workprint" edition. There are no hard cuts or major technical issues aside from the deleted scenes not being seamlessly integrated.

For instance: the opening scene has no credits running over it but once the added scene ends the credits are back.

another issue is some scenes do not have background music/sound effects (the reunion and bar scene) which can be very distracting. However these issues are overlooked because of the nature of the edit. This is a workprint edition which excuses the quality of the scenes and comedy is comedy - even though the scenes arent completely seamless, they are still very funny.

The DVD:
Not much featured here besides a custom static menu and chapter selection but it looks nice.

Video quality is nice. The deleted scenes added back into the film look slightly worse than the main film but that is due to the source material. The original DVD isnt exactly reference quality and this edit maintains the same level of clarity.

Audio is 2.0 stereo. As always, 5.1 is better but there were no major issues caused by the 2.0 audio. this film is mostly dialog and doesn't suffer from the stereo track.

The Edits:
on an editing level I thought it was a great firstling effort. a few minor cuts I would have made here and there but thats always something I feel when watching an edit.

Editing: 8 of 10 - As I mentioned there were no major technical issues in the editing only things I would have done differently and most issues were caused by the quality of the deleted scenes, not the editing.

Entertainment: 9 of 10 - I liked the original about an 8 and I thought the added material was funnier than the original so this gets a 9.

Image & Video Quality:
Image quality was comparable to the official DVD throughout except for the deleted scenes.
Video Quality: 7 of 10 average ( 8 of 10 for main film 6/10 for deleted scenes)

Audio Editing & Audio Quality:
2.0 audio hurts the score but it wasnt distracting. there were a few instances where the deleted scenes volume levels seemed to differ but for the most part audio editing was very well done. no hard cuts/pops/etc.
Audio Quality: 8 of 10
Audio Editing: 9 of 10

Presentation:
Static menu with Play and Scene Selection. Custom menu screens. No sound during menus. Simple but effective but some bonus materials would have been nice.
Presentation: 6 of 10

Final Result: 8 of 10

There are many technical issues present here due to the quality of the deleted scenes not seamlessly matching the quality of the main film which would be cause for denial of approval from me but since this is listed as a workprint edition I dont have any issues granting this extended edition a thumbs up.. Its has rough spots that a more seasoned editor with better tools could fix but in this case, funny is still funny. so, download w/ confidence. just be aware this is a workprint!

Thanks for the review and your approval Elbarto1. I hope everyone enjoys it despite the difference between the deleted scenes and the movie itself.

I just have a few comments regarding your review, if you don't mind.

For the most part the deleted scenes are seamlessly integrated but there are a few that aren't. That's only because the merging of scenes couldn't be made on an angle change. If you take a look at the extended opening you'll be able to see where I spliced it in and then out again but if you take a look at the next deleted scene, called "Fugly Mook", you can't tell that a cut was made because the transition from movie to deleted scene back to movie again was made on an angle change.

I didn't really find that to be an issue. The addition to the reunion scene starts with Miri drinking at the bar after she finds out that she's plastered all over the internet in granny panties and then like 30 seconds later they start the award ceremony. I think it's entirely possible that the music is missing because they cut it themselves in the movie instead of starting a new song and then have to stop it so soon afterwards. During the bar scene though the music is very low so it's already not that noticeable.

The 2.0 audio is caused by the deleted scenes being in 2.0. The movie itself is in 5.1 but when the deleted scenes were added in TMPGEnc DVD Author automatically made the change to 2.0 audio. Like you said though the film is mostly dialogue so it shouldn't really be a problem.

I tried not to cut anything out because I was going for an extended cut of the film. The cuts I did make I had to make because it wouldn't have worked otherwise. I would have liked to cut down on the romance storyline, and did to a certain extent by not including certain deleted scenes and only including half of another one, but for the most part this wasn't possible.

I'm curious why you gave the main film an 8/10 for quality since I didn't do anything to alter the quality of the main movie.

I was thinking about adding the Star Wars song that plays during the costume tests to the main menu but completely forgot. I would have liked to include some extras but the DVD already clocked in at 4.30 GB's and I didn't have enough material to warrant making this a DVD9. At most it would have clocked in at just over 5 GB's and that seems like a waste of a perfectly good DVD9 to me.

I agree but any jarring transition (even if the editing is well executed) is still not seamless IMO.

its not a dealbreaker but I found it to be an obvious issue. there is lots of crowd noise and music pumping and then silence.

Its not a problem but its not the best possible option. 5.1 can be faked with a number of programs. I know you had to work with what you had and it still sounds fine but 2.0 will always be subpar to 5.1 on any release.

I know that you were going for quantity and probably should have omitted that comment. I just mean, areas like where miri hits the lightswitch and you added the scene, I would have cut there directly to the coffeepot rather than having the wonky scene switch mid-shot. its really just editor preference and IMO would have made the switch less jarring.

I'm curious why you gave the main film an 8/10 for quality since I didn't do anything to alter the quality of the main movie.

because the retail DVD doesnt look very good. its not as bad as the dark knight but there are a great deal of jaggies and artifacts throughout. I guess I am just spoiled by HD.
its not a negative reflection on your edit though as your edit is of the same quality as my retail DVD.

I was thinking about adding the Star Wars song that plays during the costume tests to the main menu but completely forgot.
adding that song would have been great.

I would have liked to include some extras but the DVD already clocked in at 4.30 GB's and I didn't have enough material to warrant making this a DVD9. At most it would have clocked in at just over 5 GB's and that seems like a waste of a perfectly good DVD9 to me.

extras arent required but they do stretch the overall score in a review. lowering the bitrate can allow for more space if needed but I understand what you are saying and I have released 2 dvd's w/ no extras so I cant really talk :)

Why were some deleted scenes not able to be done on an angle change?

I wasn't able to start them on an angle change because the deleted scene started too late in the scene and if I was to use the next angle change that would mean that part of the deleted scene that I wanted to include would have to be cut.

i'm frustrated by a few things:
* the use of binary split - unable to verify, please use rar
* the use of an image - totally unnecessary, please use VIDEO_TS like everyone else
* i am getting complaints of image size while burning. it is too large (maybe you maxed out DVD-R? i use DVD+R and usually ~6mb doesn't matter)

regardless, you just don't understand images enough to use them and it makes no sense to do that anyways.

hmm... I am recently releasing everything in iso image. It seemed to me that people preferred this format a lot to video_ts, because it can be easily burned with imgburn.

the only issues i run into are with people using images incorrectly. i've been forced to mount and extract several images and it is just frustrating... knowing this step is totally unnecessary.

when I started out with all this digital mumbo jumbo I preferred ISO format but as I learned more I came to love and prefer VIDEO_TS folders because it is just as easy to burn and I can easily attach a DVD_ROM folder w/ art/etc w/o having to unpack the ISO.

I vote for VIDEO_TS as the standard.

What is there to understand? I put the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders into PowerISO, hit the SAVE button, type in what I want to call it and select the .ISO extension and it creates the image file for me. I don't know why you're getting complaints of image size because I've never filled up a DVD to the brim.

The reason why I create image files instead of using WinRar is because WinRar takes about 2 hours to split the whole thing whereas it takes less than 10 minutes to create an image file and only about 5 minutes to split it with HJSplit. If you don't like image files then you've got two options. 1) Don't download it if it's an image file or 2) Once downloaded and joined to one file with HJSplit right-click the image file and select "Extract with WinRar". That'll extract the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders and you can burn them like you normally would.

I have never received any complaints from anyone before regarding problems with the image files, aside from the first time I created an image file but that's unrelated, so I don't know why you're getting them. Regardless, I am not going to stop creating image files instead of Rar'ing my releases when it takes about 2 hours to Rar and less than 15 minutes to create the image file and then split it with HJSplit.

not saying what tool you should use, BUT if you change the settings in WinRar from NORMAL compression to STORE, it will only take a couple minutes to create the rar archives.

Seconded

I vote for VIDEO_TS too. The insistence on ISO images in the downloading world has always confused me. It seems to serve no real purpose while it creates a problem in that a 4+gig image is too big for FAT32-formatted external disks - which is still in wide use due to cross-platform compatibility. VIDEO_TS circumvents the whole problem without creating any new ones; pretty much every burning app under the sun can burn from VIDEO_TS folders just fine.

ISO does have a great function for dual layer discs. It allows the author and creator to set the break points for the layers. However, I agree that an ISO is pretty much useless for a single layer disc.

BUT, all that said, lets please not carry on with this discussion here. If you want to talk about proposed standards, please check out or start a new topic in the technical help section.

Lets save this topic for discussion of the actual fanedit...

hehe, yes. it doesnt really compress it at all, just split it into archives. You will have more compression going with normal.
