Species X

What is it about? When a beautiful human-alien hybrid (Henstridge) escapes from captivity, a special team tries to exterminate her before she is able to fulfill her purpose: to mate with a human male and produce offspring that could destroy mankind.

Conceptual Improvements /advancements of edit over original

Species has the great premise of a human-alien hybrid on the sexual rampage in LA. Unfortunately, the movie falls apart quickly with endless cliché upon cliché. The ending is a real formulaic cop-out. The stunning Natasha Henstridge does make this movie very memorable.

This FanEdit is an attempt to create an alternative version of Species. Mars is NOT the origin of the alien DNA but further away in unknown deep space. There are some newly created scenes and there is an entirely new ending.

I will let you be the judge if this works or not.

WARNING: This FanEdit contains moments of an explicit sexual nature and extreme gore.

Interesting, though I skipped what you cut a I see that for spoilers. I like to read that after I watch an edit.

Ok another one on the que list

oh mollo...its 2009 :D

Mmm, I can see why you were somewhat ambivalent about releasing this, Mollo. It's hard to say for sure if it works or not.

Spoilers...

The first hour is good work, a nice streamlining of the first film, a lot of goofy crap excised. (And a Nikki Dial cameo, nice. ;) ) Full marks for most of the edit.

Obviously, my main interest was in whether or not the new finale would work...the original film has a true stinker of an ending, so it's not as though they gave you a lot to work with.

Ultimately, I don't think the new climax (pun intended) does much for me, but it's certainly better than the old one.

My main problem with the new ending is that the 'four months later' stuff just seemed a little disjointed...or maybe random is a better word, I dunno. The Species III material is just silly. (The kind of silly that you removed from Species 1) I'm pretty sure if a friend of mine had a hole clean through their head, I wouldn't stare into their face calling their name as though they were asleep. :D

It just plays too cheaply for what really spells the end of the world, in my opinion.

But like I said, top notch work on the main body. I can't fault any of that stuff.
Love the opening title shot, by the way. The 'S P E C I E S' strobing in and out was cool. I've always wondered who OK'd the gloriously amateurish title screen in the film proper. :)

Last note, the Species closing credits (after your new ones) are in a different ratio to the rest of the film. Not that it matters much, just thought I would mention it.

Thank you Uncanny for taking the time to comment and I see all your points. :)

Just focus on the fact that I liked 60 out of 70 minutes. :)

...And even though the ending didn't work for me, the idea behind it definitely does.

I was really looking forward to grabbing this but now I see that it's a DVD9. How can it be a DVD9 if the movie is only 78 minutes? Just how much deleted content is included? What's the full size? Is it just slightly over the limit or way over the limit?

well, there are some nice extras, which boosts the total time up, but he also used PCM audio, which really takes up a lot of space.

If you wish I can make a Single Layer without the extras. I just assumed that, as there is an AVI the FanEdit can be previewed to see if it is worth a DL DVD download. Anyway this will be my last FanEdit so I hope it you enjoy it.

I was really looking forward to this movie so I was planning on burning it to DVD, which I never do with AVI's. Can the movie itself be fit onto a DVD5 or would it require shrinking? What trailers are included? If they're trailers of your edits would they fit on a DVD5 along with the movie, without either having to be shrunk?

The dvd is 5.17gigs, but as ThrownCPR reported it uses lpcm sound (wave). So if the audio was an ac3 instead it would come very close to if not being a regular dvd5. As is now, yes you would have to shrink it

You can't just drop a bomb like that and not explain, Mollo. What's the deal? Nothing bad, I hope...

See to me that seems like a waste of a DVD9. It's less than 1 GB more than what you can put on a DVD5. I've never bought DVD9's because they're usually way more expensive than DVD5's but if I did I'd make sure that I'd be getting my space worth out of it. Nothing against Mollo or this edit I just think that if you're going to make a DVD dual-layered you should really pack it with content so the need to use a DVD9 is really worth it.

Yes you are right..... but to be honest most people watch an AVI if it is available. Real fans of FanEdits or of a particular film, will make the effort to download a full DVD but most won't.

I know the limitations of my system and what I can achieve. I cannot produce a DVD with an assigned bit-rate or AC3 sound because my software is domestic and limits or automates my options. This can all be fixed, of course by buying software that is professional and unfortunately very very expensive.

I have been told that windows users can make a SL disc simply but converting the sound to AC3. With that in mind I hoped to give out the best quality version I could, which is DL copy. I hope this answers all your questions and we can talk of other things.

I am moving again and my main computer will be out of reach. I can't see myself on the move editing on a laptop again like I did with Star Trek BUGS. I will not be able to devote the time I had last year to editing FanEdits. Consecution will probably be all I have time for.
