So I'm finally going to fill out my Bond collection. Thus far, I'd only ever bothered to own a few of the flicks, and would rent/borrow the rest of them. But I've decided to go ahead and fill out the old DVD shelf with a full set. I was thinking of picking up the Ultimate Edition DVDs, because the features look really cool on most of them, but I've also heard some grumbling about the quality of the transfers on those discs. So, should I go with the UEs, or look for older releases?

Well, it depends. Some of the Ultimate Editions have some slightly large problems, like some pretty serious cropping on 2 films, AVTAK and Goldeneye, and some of the color correction is messed up, like the opening of OHMSS. Personally, here's my list of the best for each film:

Dr. No-Goldfinger: UE (UE has original framing, and color correction is good)
Thunderball: SE and UE (SE has some problems, UE as well)
You Only Live Twice: UE (Good picture and better extras)
OHMSS: SE for film, UE for extras (The blue tint in the opening is horrendous, but it's nice hearing
from caveman Lazenby)
Diamonds are Forever: SE (Picture got really messed up on the UE, not that many new extras)
LALD-TMWTGG: UE (Great new extras, mostly improved picture, except for the orange tint in
LALD's titles)
TSWLM: SE/UE are about the same (SE has grain issues, UE has blue snow in Austria)
Moonraker-Octopussy: UE (Roger's commentaries are really fun to listen to, and picture looks good)
AVTAK: SE (WAY to much cropping)
TLD-LTK: UE (Correct framing on UE)
Goldeneye: SE (See AVTAK)
TND-DAD-UE (Nice, upgraded picture over the SE)

This is what you should get:

James Bond UE Volumes 1-4 (For excellent transfers, DTS, and AWESOME Extras!)
Casino Royale (1967) Original Release for including the Climax! Casino Royale episode)
Casino Royale (1967) 40th AE
Live And Let Die Original SE (For having the Original Mono Track not included on the UE)
Licence To Kill Original SE (For The Theatrical Cut)
GoldenEye Original SE (It appears the UE was cropped. So buy this also.)
Die Another Day Original SE (For having some extras not included on the UE)
Never Say Never Again CE
Casino Royale (2006) 3-Disc CE
Quantum Of Solace 2-Disc SE

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Eh? Hadn't heard about this difference. Was something cut in the UE? Thanks also for the links, they're quite helpful.

I've heard a lot about that GoldenEye crop. Does anyone know why on Earth they did it?

I think I'm going with the Ultimate Edition boxes for the first 20, the Casino Royale CE, the Quantum of Solace SE, and the Never Say Never Again CE. I'll also be supplementing the collection with a few of the SE releases specified in this thread.

License to Kill was presented uncut and in the correct aspect ratio on the UE, and Thunderball has few sync errors as well as some flawed color correction, while the SE has some of the worst opticals I have ever seen on a DVD, and those same opticals look fantastic on the UE. BTW, mono soundtracks are only available in R1, I think.

I own all the SE releases and haven't had any motive to upgrade, especially with the issues that some of the UE's have. I've heard that the new Blu Rays are fantastic and once those get neatly boxed up, it might be time for me to upgrade.

Some of the SE transfers are awful (particularly LTK and GE). The 80's Bonds hold up pretty well in the SE's, as do MR and TSWLM. The earlier ones are hit and miss, mostly because they are so old.

All that said, if you're still watching them on a SDTV, then the SE's will be fine. On an HDTV or a computer, a lot of the UE's gain an advantage. If you can hold out, I would suggest waiting until all the Bond movies come out on Blu Ray.

Right...don't I remember someone on OT talking about doing a hybrid cut of the UE and the SE to get the best possible version?

Speaking of that, I see a lot of Bond edits and preservations mentioned, but rarely available. What are the essentials?

There's Pressure Point by Tubes (Best version of TWINE ever), Never Say McClory Again (EON-izes NSNA), The OHMSS tv cut (really good edit of this obscenity against one of the best Bond films), and Beyond the Ice by ADM (wonderful re-edit of DAD); all of which are available on the site. Fanfiltration did his "Banned Bond" preservations of the first 3 Bond films as they were released on the Criterion laserdiscs, and a Thunderball project that got cancelled. None of Fanfiltration's work is on the site, and his edits are considered quite rare.

Personally, if you want to do Bond edits, you need the 4 volumes of Ultimate Editions, a few of the SE's, and the soundtracks. The Ultimate Editions are the best source for audio and video quality, however, if there are transfer issues, use the SE. The soundtracks will come in handy to add new bits of score or to reinforce weak score (The '03 reissues to be exact).

They've released several box sets on Blu-Ray but there's only three films per box.

Doing my own Bond edits is a ways in the future. The films I would want to edit need pretty serious work (CR67, for example, which probably isn't even possible, or the really nutty Blofeld stuff in DAF), and I'd want to know what I'm doing a little more before I tackle something like that. Hopefully I learn a lot of what I need to learn on the Clerks II edit.

Yes, but I meant all 22 Bond flicks all nicely packaged together in a box or a briefcase, like what R2 got with the UE's. Of course, I also need to find out how to rip and edit them as well.

They do have a complete box set with all the Bonds, minus Casino Royale 67 and Quantum Of Solace, in Region 1. It has the four UE box sets and the 2-disc edition of Casino Royale with Daniel Craig.

I meant a complete box set of the Blu Rays. That would be impossible now, considering that not all of the Bond films have been released on Blu Ray. I already own all 20 SE's, the inital Casino Royale 2 disc, the Quantum of Solace 1 disc, and the old Never Say Never Again DVD.

Ahhh! I thought you were talking about DVD's because you said Region 2 and Ultimate Editions. Blu-Ray's are regioned by letters', region A, B, C and region free, and the Blu-Ray's aren't labeled as Ultimate Editions although they do have the same content as the UE. That's what had me confused.

Does it violate site rules, or is it just that no one's uploaded it?

They're not here because they aren't fan edits but preservations. What's included is a transfer of each film from the Laserdisc and all the extras included. The extras that were on the LD's aren't available anywhere else and iirc those include commentary tracks.

Preservations can be discussed but you can't openly ask about trading them. There's a Preservation sub-section if you want to discuss them but like I said asking for trades is a no-no. If you know a certain member that has them you can contact that person by PM but that's about it. And before you ask I do not have the Banned Bond Laserdisc transfers.
