Now that was a totally disappointing movie for me. The sets looked really good and that is where anything good stops for me. Telling this story as if it was an action movie - no go.
The Third Reich as an easy place to find fellow revolutionaries - no go.
Tom Cruise as Claus von Stauffenberg - no go.
This movie in English - sorry, no go.

Bryan Singer should have stuck to X-Men movies.

I watched the entire movie and was partly mildly entertained by some of the good actors: Tom Wilkinson, Thomas Kretschmann, Christian Berkel.

it was fun to see even reknown german intellectuals go totally berserk over the fact that almighty tom is playing the only hero of the german 3. reich (which is historically not quit aqurate)

and maybe - just maybe - the x-men dude shouldn´t be called in if it gets to such a task...

they don´t ask george lucas to do a remake of ´ghandi´, do they?

i really loved tom cruise in tropic thunder though. the guy really knows how to dance...

I enjoyed this film.
I didn't think it was a "Tom Cruise" film, i.e. he was just one of a great cast.
Being in English didn't bother me either.

I thought it stuck fairly closely to what I thought the real story was but I have since read that it is not too accurate. Any thoughts on this?

BTW after the big exposion I was asked "is he dead?" LOL

Isn't there a German film of the same story called Staufenberg (spelling!)?

but Spielberg managed to create a good "Schindler's List"
He might even be able to create a nice "Ghandi" but that is already perfect.

As an unreformed Tom Cruise fan (the acting and the movies, not the kooky real-life antics), I really enjoyed it. Some more historical context would have been nice, and as far as I understand it, its only real errors in that regard were sins of omission; but if the movie had gone deeper into any of the characters it would have had to go deeper into many of the characters, for fairness' sake. As an historical thriller, I thought it was very good.

And while I'd have been glad to see a German-made version (I thought Downfall was terrific), I thought Cruise did a fine job as an english-speaking Stauffenberg.

Can only add that I enjoyed it. Alot of good names in there.

My parents didn't 'get it'. But then, they seem to get confused over Godzilla.

I enjoyed this movie. Kind of Ocean's Eleven meet WW2.
I only wished Cruise's Character had more development through the movie. I mean Cruise is, once more, a "good guy" from the begining till the end. On the other hand, his character seems more driven by patriotism than by scruple about what happended in the death camps for exemple.

2 questions boon:
- Has German cinema made their own version of this? I'm just wondering about all the geman cinema we don't get out here.
I remember when i was in Paris I went to a video store hoping to find all these dvds that I didnt get at home because of hollywood rule
and all I found was the same hollywood dreck that you find everywhere else.

- If you were making an arthouse version of this ala SCHINDLER'S LIST who would you cast instead of Tom?

unfortunately from what I know there is no German version of the Stauffenberg story.
who would I cast instead of Tom? hehe, Ralph Fiennes jumps to my mind right ahead. He already gave a great German in Schindler.

you know, writing to you about german cinema got me thinking about how little i know about cinema other than hollywood.
does germany have a huge cinema community? do you guys have your own tv dramas?
what about europe? do you watch say italian tv dramas? or spanish soap operas? or is it all hollywood?
can you get paytv from all the countries in europe? can you get close captioning in your mother language?

then I started thinking about how there are no fanedits that were not originally a hollywood film source.
maybe we should start a FANEDIT+ brand of fanedits. strictly european or hong kong.
the NIGHTWATCH epic comes to mind. surely that could use a fanedit.

Nightwatch was great, Daywatch... not so much. I'd love a fanedit of them though. And isnt there a 3rd in the works?

yes. Lots of moviegoers and about 20 major films per year from Germany. Most of all is comedy, but sometimes even a great drama like "Baader Meinhoff Komplex" or "Downfall"

of course and some are quite good.

French movies are quite successful in Germany, Spanish is also ok, forget about Italy. But of course a lot of European stuff is aired.

no, you can only get German PayTV and some foreign PayTV via sat, but to get access is hard. And as for the mother language, we are the number 1 country with quality dubbing. I think we have the biggest worldwide dubbing industry. Very professional and very good. Everything gets dubbed. Even porn. Man, was I happy, when DVDs showed up and I finally could watch the movies in English without having to buy expensive imports.

"Today we dub Germany, tomorrow... The Vorld!"

I would love if you'd turn your original German dramas into movies.
forget the american series. anything like THE X FILES?

As a matter of fact, I'd love some french tv dramas as well. If they're good. (are you listening TMBTM?)

And why forget Italy? you don't like their variety shows? lol!

Mmmm, some french TV series and movies made for TV have a lot of succes in france and around the world. But I usualy find that they lack good pacing, try too hard to look like american TV series these days (we have our CSI clones around here...) without achieving that goal properly, and I usualy find the actors not really good (with some exeptions).
It usualy tries too hard to be family friendly. We don't have our LOST or our Prison Break yet. TV series that have big succes here are now about every day life of a bunch of characters. But I feel things are begining to change, and maybe we will have some good and original TV series soon in france. I think we have some good writters and directors around here, it's just that the TV channels don't take much risk. They'd always prefer making another lazy cheap cops series instead of putting money on the table for a SF one.

glad to see you still around voodl.
I googled those titles and could not read what they were about.
And just like poland, the rest of the world must have worthwhile projects to fanedit.
how about an International Fanedit Festival? Now that would be fun!
