Hi,

I was needing help with the best program to use to convert a huge AVI file to MKV without losing quality. I have been using Langarith lossless codec in Virtualdub to convert some old VHS tapes to digital files.
 
Not only Handbrake converts videos to other formats without loss. Moreover, MKV is a very popular format for conversion. But free software usually converts videos up to 20 minutes without loss of quality. But a paid application can convert videos of any length.
 
^^ this thread is two years old. I doubt they care anymore.

But I'm pretty sure handbrake isn't lossless anyway. I don't care what the quality slider says. One could probably just remux with freeware.
 
There is a loss of quality, I myself once used a handbrake. Initially, I checked the video quality in the VQMT program, got certain values, there are about 19 indicators. I needed to convert videos to other formats. When converting video to 4K with the handbrake, the bitrate decreased by 29 points, and this is only one of the main parameters for me. When I converted the video in the movavi video converter program, their site. The losses were quite insignificant. Bitrate decreased by 1. Out of all 19 objective indicators. So movavi, I think, is an ideal option. In addition, the free version allows you to convert to 24 formats.
 
I believe you can use the open source freeware makemkv. I only use it to rip Blu ray but it I'm pretty sure it should allow you to put anything in an mkv container without reencoding (which is where you'd introduce generational quality loss). If someone still wants an answer.

How do you convert mkv to mp4? Like what software is there that's most available and the most reliable?

If you didn't work it out yet MKVToolnix is just what the doctor ordered. Extremely easy to use and lossless. Drag, export, done.

Thanks for the heads up!

Avidemux did work like a charm... after I messed around with the settings. Before, I wasn't getting any audio on the exported conversion. Eventually, I got it to work.

I appreciate the alternative option. I'll download MKVToolnix just so I have something else to work with. Sounds simpler too.
