NEGLIFY'S 2018 BIRTHDAY SCAVENGER HUNT

I love watching movies. I love reading other people’s opinions on movies. I love seeing things like TM2YC’s “1001 Movies To See Before You Die” challenge and Garp’s “My Year With Hitch” challenge. (Not to mention the “Movie Club” that MusicEd started.) I’ve been doing similar things for a while on Letterbox’d (and that’s only when I found a site to keep track of the movies I binge). Check out these Scavenger Hunts I’ve gone on through the last few years, and the wacky low-quality movies I used to watch with my Letterbox’d homies. (Check out the one I picked the tasks for, Scav Hunt 19, it’s awesome.)

May is my birthday month (whoopty shit, right?) so I decided to share my Scavenger Hunt with you FE peeps. Feel free to join me in watching some (or all) of these flicks, or just follow this thread and check out my reviews, or just say “FTG” and ignore me. I plan on watching them in order, but y’all can do whatever you want, you can even choose different flicks if you don’t like the stupid stuff I’m watching.

I’m almost certain I’ll be able to get ahold of all these flicks. Some of the obscure ones are on YouTube, BUT I WILL NOT BE POSTING ANY LINKS TO FULL-LENGTH MOVIES IN THIS THREAD AND NOBODY ELSE SHOULD EITHER. Google is your friend; private messages are awesome; invisible threads exist.

All right enough preamble, here are the tasks. There were 31 tasks in the original list (by user “Bethan”) but I cut it down to 23, since I was born on the 23rd. And I slightly altered a couple of her tasks, sue me.

IT'S A CELEBRATION, BITCHES.

I've not seen many of those. These are awesome:

- John Singleton's 'Higher Learning'
- Jodorowsky’s Dune
- Martin Scorsese's 'Silence'
- David Lean's Doctor Zhivago

This is fine to meh:

- Saving Mr. Banks

This is pure unwatchable torture from start to finish:

- Star Wars Holiday Special

Dammit. I genuinely thought that was a thread about the Will Smith/Kevin James movie and so ignored it. I shall have to read back through it.

Well then I'm certainly glad you read this thread's OP so now you can enjoy Garp's excellent reviews of Alfred's filmography. I've never had the patience or dedication for all of those. I'm proud enough of my 27 Hitchchoke experiences. And I've seen all 4 Psychos and the garbage 80s TV movie "Bates Motel" and every episode of the wonderful 2010s TV show "Bates Motel".  On my watch list is that documentary "78.52".

^^This amuses me^^

Although, I can't tell if you're joking or not. I also genuinely thought the same thing and avoided it for a long time. Glad I eventually clicked on it, because it's a great thread.

Also, just received the Hitchcock Masterpiece Collection on blu-ray - so I will be trying to join @"Garp" for as many as I can.

Back to Neglify. I haven't heard of loads of those either, but I love the idea of a movie birthday binge/scavenger hunt.

Nah.  I've tried to watch it, and it commits the terrible sin of being unwatchable via being boring.

I love it. Watch it at least once a year ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like the @"TM2YC" version, because it compacts and highlights all the horror into a package that's nearly digestible.

Even so, I will never watch it again.

I still have nightmares.

"That Was Then... This Is Now"
Film #1 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: A film released in 1985.

I'm a lowkey-hardcore fan of Emilio Estevez and I was excited to learn that the first script he wrote was an adaptation of an S.E. Hinton novel (the woman who wrote "The Outsiders") that was released in 1985 (the Year of Our Neg) and directed by the guy who did "Young Guns" and "Gone Fishin'" and OMG, a little cherry on top, it co-stars God himself, Morgan Freeman. How had I not heard of this? Emilio-face did this like right after "Repo Man", "The Breakfast Club" and "St. Elmo's Fire" and right before "Maximum Overdrive". Prime-choice Estevez-E.

Then I watched the movie and realized why nobody had heard of this ever. Every aspect of the film was poorly executed. The script is cliched, the acting is lame, it looks like it was filmed with a home camera and no lighting equipment at all, et cetera. But it occasionally stunned me with it's beauty. There's a wonderful monologue from Emiliomg where he's sitting next to a window looking at the rain in a dark room and the moonlight hits his face and the reflection of the rain on the glass makes it look like he's crying. Fuck that shot was glorious. The words coming out of his mouth were trite bullshit but at least the cinematographer came to set sober that night.

There's a huge dramatic moment halfway through that I did not foresee happening and I was all like oh snap this movie just moved up a notch let's see where they take this. Then the main characters sulk and mourn for like 7 minutes and Emilino holds up a newspaper headline that declared the case solved and everybody promptly forgot about it.

This movie literally has a teenaged character named M&M who ODs on pills because he's so addicted to eating colorful candy. It could have been dramatic but it was so stupidly done all I could think about during the scene was what drugs exactly he was doing and how many was too many. In the book the kid took too much LSD but there's no way in hell the pills I saw under that mattress was the LoveSexyDrug, no way no sir. That kid took uppers and downers, not the all-arounders.

The film redeemed itself in the end when Emilio says the movie's title to Best Friend Guy, and it's actually a callback to Best Friend Guy saying the movie title in act one.

Emilio: Somebody once told me something smart. That was then, this is now.
Best Friend Guy (with a smirk): Who told you that?
Neglify in real life: Some asshole.
Emilio on screen: I don't know, some asshole.
(Insert "Citizen Kane clapping gif" here.)

"Saving Mr. Banks"
Film #2 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: A film from Bethan's favourite films list.

I'm legit astounded by how much I liked this film. I picked it for two main reasons; "Mary Poppins" is one of my mom's favorite films, and when this movie was released at Christmas my mother and her sister decided to see this instead of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with my pops and I. Joke's on me, because this was better than all those Hobbits films.

"The Amityville Curse"
Film #3 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: May 3rd is National Paranormal Day; watch a film featuring the paranormal.

What a terribly wonderful film to fall asleep to. I only regret finishing it the next morning.

"The Star Wars Holiday Special"
Film #4 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: May the Fourth be with you.

I didn't actually rewatch The Holiday Special, since one complete viewing is more than enough for one lifetime. I watched the 18-minute abridged version, Fear and Loathing in the Star Wars Holiday Special (password: fanedit.org). I was appropriately dosed and the insanity I viewed made me giggle uproariously. The perfect way to watch this epic piece of bantha poo-doo.

1/5 for the original
4/5 for the fanedit

I'm not really reading this thread but just wanted to say happy birthday Neg.  Love ya.

"Tarzan"
Film #5 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt

Item: Watch an animated Walt Disney Classic that you haven't seen.

I grew up watching (and re-watching) damn near all the Disney Animated Classics but after "Pocahontas", "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Hercules" I checked out. Hell, I didn't even get around to seeing "Mulan" until like 6 months ago. I always figured this Tarzan flick was lame and not worth the time. Turned out I quite liked it, but similar to Mulan, I wish it had been just a little longer to really flesh things out.

You'll love Class of 1999, I used to watch that back in the day.  Cyborg teachers and a lot of gore.  Class of 1999 Part 2 was awesome amazing, with the great Sasha Mitchell.  Put that one on your list for your 2019 birthday list.  Happy Belated Birthday!!

"The Way"
Film #6 of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: A film with a cast member or director born in May.
(Actor/Writer/Director Emilio Estevez born May 12, 1962.)

This is easily the best film from writer/director Emilio Estevez. The plot is pretty simple and poignant; Martin Sheen finds out Emilio died in the Pyrenees moutains on a pilgrimage, "The Way of St. James", then papa Sheen takes the pilgrimage himself to honor his son.

I ain't gonna lie, this movie had me tearing up a few times. It's a beautiful father/son story and I heartily recommend checking this one out.

4.5/5

"The Outsiders"
Bonus Film of Neglify's 2018 Birthday Scavenger Hunt
Item: A film with a cast member or director born in May.
(Actor/Writer/Director Emilio Estevez born May 12, 1962.)

"Man, remember that movie The Outsiders and one of the guys name was 'Soda Pop', and at the time it was cool?... It's not cool right now. If your nickname was 'Soda Pop'... you would be dead." - Mitch Hedberg, RIP
