Well, each to their own, but yeah, when each progressive sequel denies more and more of the first 2 films, you're pretty much left with no choice but to
say that T-1 worked but this is the resulting/alternate timeline.
It's actually very much in keeping with the theme from the very beginning: the idea that they're trying to create a different future than what has "already happened."  Dark Fate is the most loyal film yet, imho.  But hey, that's just like, my opinion, man.

So, I have now watch Terminator: Dark Fate. I'm going to agree that Rise Of The Machines was a better movie.

As much as I dig your praise for T3... :)

The opening Dark Fate, scene in which not-yet-Carl kills John most definitely takes place after T2, as does the rest of the movie. The destruction of Cyberdyne did prevent the Skynet Judgment Day; it just didn't prevent Legion from doing the same thing, because franchise gotta franchise. Yes, it's super dumb. ;)

I haven't seen Dark Fate yet but if it is better than T3, it'll be the first film in the franchise to not be the "worst" so far IMO: T1>T2>T3>TS>TG

Oh, there's no question that Dark Fate is better than Genisys. None whatsoever. Where it places with regards to the others can be reasonably debated... IMHO. :)

The opening doesn't make sense if it's supposed to take place after T2 because the John from T2 was older than the John that got killed. And if it's supposed to take place after T2 then why would John be afraid of "not yet Carl" when he spent the entirety of T2 trying to protect him? I suppose you could argue that he's afraid because his Arnie sacrificed himself at the end of T2, but then I return to the fact that the John that got killed at the beginning of Dark Fate was younger than the John that was in T2.

Well it appears this isn’t on the German Amazon Prime. Oh well, I’m not sure I’ve even seen the previous one or two. I know I’ve seen 3 and the one with Bale. While I haven’t particularly liked any since T2, I remember liking the very ending of 3.

With respect, I'm quite certain you're mistaken on that count, and I think a quick Googling regarding the filmmaker's intentions for that scene would confirm it. ;)

John was afraid of not-yet-Carl because he knew Uncle Bob was gone, so another Terminator approaching him out of the blue was probably bad news, and it was.

Amazon Prime just added Terminator: Dark Fate so I figured I'd watch Terminator: Genisys first since I still hadn't seen it yet. I was expecting a sequel but this was really just a remake from an alternate timeline. While I liked the nods to the original this one just didn't do it for me.

It must just be on Prime in Canada. In the US is says I have to sign up for Epix ($6/month).

TERMINATOR DARK FATE:

My wife loved it, and gave it 8.5 out of 10.

I was less impressed, and generously give it a low 7 out of 10.
But after a rewatch, I was even less impressed, and now give it a solid 6 out of 10.

I thoroughly enjoyed Linda Hamilton and Arnold. Hamilton brings some much needed gravitas to the film. And though I had many, many (oh so many lol) problems with Arnold's Terminator storyline, there is no denying he is a scene stealer.

The new generation of heroes are solid, though lacking the same level of onscreen charisma as their seniors.

There was a lot press and hoopla from the marketing department promoting James Cameron return to the franchise with this film as a producer, but if he actually had much influence on this movie, I do not really see it. Visually, it does not remotely look like a Cameron movie. The colour palette is dull, dark and uninteresting. And the movie's over dependence and saturation of CGI breaks the wall of cinematic reality very early on in the first act and never recovers, making most of the big action scenes tensionless.

But I guess the biggest issue I had is with the Big Twist (which happens in the first 5 minutes), as it never feels earned and makes first two classic Terminator movies narratively pointless. And after that, this movie just feels like a tired plot retread of T2.

My advice, save your money and use it to buy TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. A much more respectful, rewarding and entertaining viewing experience.

Ranking THE TERMINATOR franchise...

1984 THE TERMINATOR -- the one that started it all! The perfect blend of sci-fi and horror. 10/10.

1991 T2: JUDGEMENT DAY -- pure adrenaline action sequel bolstered further by the amazing transformative performance by Linda Hamilton. 10/10.

2003 TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES -- I really enjoy this one. A good cast, some great practical effects and action. Too much humour at the cost of character. But the last 5-10 minutes of that movie is Fanastic! 8/10.

2008 THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES -- 2 short seasons on the FOX Network. The show was intelligent, insightful, unrelenting and true to the universe that spawned it. An incredible tv series that deserved better. 9/10

2009 TERMINATOR SALVATION -- I respect this movie for actually trying to do something new and fresh with the franchise, even if it stumbled and fell before reaching the finishing line. 7/10.

2015 TERMINATOR GENISYS -- uhg... the idea was better than the execution. Poorly cast and again an over dependence on CGI made the action scenes shatter any suspension of disbelief. Not even the return of Arnold could save this misfire. 6/10.

I decided to go back and take another look. I compared screenshots of John from T2 and from Dark Fate and my memory must have been playing tricks on me. I remember T2 John looking about 14 while Dark Fate John looks a couple of years or so younger than that. But the screenshots confirmed it. The two Johns look exactly alike. My bad.

It's entirely possible. I know that the contents of our streaming services does differ.

You are not the only person to think this.  Because of recasting actors (and maybe losing an inch or two in height?) I guess it left the door open for dude's childhood memories to cloud their perception.  Given the age of many boys when they watched T2, John probably seemed older and bigger than when they watch Dark Fate as an adult and just view John as a child.

The best part of T3!  I remember thinking what balls they had to really go for it!  Unfortunately, on a rewatch, there's so much other stupid stuff in that movie that it just lost me before the ending.

BionicBob, I'm with your wife, and I guess I disagree with you on one thing: I thought Mackenzie Davis was phenomenal!  She wasn't even on my radar before the film, but she was so awesome that I can't wait to see what else she does.

Edward Furlong was 14 when he played John Connor in T2.
Jude Collie, who did the motion capture for John Connor in Dark Fate, was 15.
The character was 10 years old in both films.

Woah!  He was supposed to be 10 in T2!?  I didn't get that at all!  He screamed "teen rebellion" to me...

^ The T2 timeline has always been fuzzy. The short answer is that Cameron cast the role a few years older to prevent John from being too young, and counted on the pre-Internet audience (beyond a hardcore few) not to notice or care. Just go with it, he'd say. :p

Watched the first 20 or so minutes of Dude, Where's My Car? to see if there was anything to it beyond the pop-culture catch phrase. But, no, it was charmless and witless stuff, a bland riff on Wayne's World. Pass.

^Saw that in the theater.  I went because I thought Ashton Kutcher would be funny, though it turned out that the guy I didn't know, Sean William Scott, was far funnier.  Even at that time, in the zeitgeist, there were only like 2 funny scenes.

Never Say Never Again (1983)
I had never watched this start to finish.  I kind of wish Connery hadn't made it.  It's the equivalent of if Daniel Craig had SPECTRE be his last Bond film.  More thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/never-say-never-again/

It's August, which means Japanese towns all over will be celebrating O-bon, or the harvest festival, this month.  This is the time of year I use as my "Japanese Film Month" to catch up on classics.

I recently caught up on When Marnie Was There (2014), the only Studio Ghibli film I hadn't seen.  It's a complicated film with a lot of cultural meaning that takes some thinking and unpacking.  Probably underappreciated.  Full thoughts here: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/when-marnie-was-there/

That allowed me to make my Ranked Ghibli List: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/list/personal-ranking-of-studio-ghibli-feature/detail/

And I also watched Return of the Street Fighter (1974), which mostly really made me want to turn it off and throw on any of Bruce Lee's films.  Full thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/return-of-the-street-fighter/

More to follow...

So more Japanese tidbits:
I Lived, But... (1983)
A documentary about Ozu clearly made for Japanese TV, which must have been riveting for that audience, given all the people they interview that were big in the Japanese film industry.  Pretty dry and by-the-numbers for me.  Full thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/i-lived-but/

Cat Soup (2001)
A famous (infamous?) short animated film that's like Lynch does Tom & Jerry.  I reckon it would give anyone on acid a bad trip.  Full thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/cat-soup/

Maze Runner Trilogy
Maze Runner: Run of the mill post apocalyptic teen survival movie. Not terrible, but not good. 6/10
The Scorch Trials: I don't even know what this movie was. It didn't do much of anything to further the plot. The addition of the "cranks" without any competent exposition or explanation was poor. Everything was broadcasted so none of the reveal moments had any impact.  Pretty terrible movie. 4/10
Death Cure: The ending of this one just makes you wonder why they even thought the story was worth telling....5/10
One of the only characters I liked dies and didn't need to apparently and they all go off to safe haven with their immunity and leave the world to die.......yes this is about anti-exploitation, but Thomas knows that he healed Brenda and I don't know how he could live without finding a humane way to save everyone else. That's kind of his character, until the end....

^I have a soft spot for these films, as I happened to be traveling a lot when they were coming out, and watched each one on an airplane.  I don't know about you guys, but I save movies I'm skeptical about for "airplane watches".  It's like "I wouldn't spend time or money on this, but as long as it's free and I'm trapped here for 6 hours, I'll give it a chance."

In that context, I was very pleasantly surprised by the first Maze Runner.  I knew nothing about it and enjoyed the several twists of the story, plus the sound design was great.  The sequels were admittedly much more typical and not the direction I'd hoped the series would explore more, but I'll still stand by that first film... though notably my judgment may have been affected by altitude.   :)

A break from Japanese cinema:
Ender's Game (2013)
I still haven't read the book, which I'm sure is better as they always are, but I always thought this film was judged overly harshly.  Actual kid actors that can actually act?  Where are the 25 year olds?  Also the best Harrison Ford performance between 1997-2015.  More thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/enders-game/

Notorious (1946)
Ah, 1946, when the Hayes Code thought it was cool for the heroine to drunk drive within the first 5 minutes as long as the male lead slapped her unconscious for being mouthy.  Is this dated?  Not if you're Sean Connery!  More thoughts: https://letterboxd.com/nottheacademy/film/notorious/
