Very respectful to long time friend and collaborator.
I agree. I think how they handled the Log Ladies death was beautifully handled. For those that don't know, the actress died from cancer right around the time principal photography began. Knowing she probably wouldn't live to film her scenes, she and Lynch secretly shot her footage a few months earlier. They actually had a In Memory of Catherine Coulson back in episode one, so I found it very touching that in this episode it was to Margaret Lanterman, the real name of the Log Lady. Here is David Lynch's comment regarding the death of Catherine:
“Today I lost one of my dearest friends, Catherine Coulson. Catherine was solid gold. She was always there for her friends – she was filled with love for all people – for her family – for her work. She was a tireless worker. She had a great sense of humor – she loved to laugh and make people laugh. She was a spiritual person – a longtime TM [transcendental meditation] meditator. She was the Log Lady.”
—David Lynch
As for the episode as a whole there was so much going on. We're starting to see resolutions to some of the storyline's, Ed and Norma being a big one. Going into the Convenience Store and seeing Jeffrey's was pure Lynchian -- I never expected to see Bowie's character evolve into a giant industrial tea kettle.
And Audrey... I never thought she was in a coma and we were seeing what was happening in her head, but I did think her being in a mental institution was possible. I now think that might even be wrong, and that, while confused and a little unstable, she's a shut in. I also don't like the theory that Richard is the result of Mr. C raping Audrey while she was unconscious after the safety deposit box blast. That seems too dirty even for Lynch. Richard mentioned to Mr. C he knew who Mr. C was from some old photos his mother had, so I think it's more likely that after Audrey woke up and Cooper was gone, she never got over the affection she had for him and just had a keepsake. I doubt she would have kept his photo if he raped her.
And the final scene in the Roadhouse was pretty bizarre. A young woman in a booth waiting for someone, two big guys come by and move her to the floor, and then she crawls through the crowd only to start shrieking. Something bad is coming...
Overall, this is probably one of the best episodes to date. And did anyone else catch that Mark Frost was the guy walking to dog in the woods?
