Red Dwarf 1-8 due in January and a snip at £40 for all 8 BBC series, I do have all the DVDs though and much like the Hitchhiker's Guide set I'm dubious this will look any better than the SD version. Will definitely wait for reviews before taking the plunge.

I don't own any Red Dwarf on current post-VHS formats, so if this is stuffed with all the plethora of extras from previous releases, the George Lucas-ed CGI changes are switch-off-able and it's in the slim case pictured I might get a copy of this. Including the hilariously awful US pilot shows would be a nice new bonus.

Thankfully Dennis Hopper's 'The Last Movie' is getting a European release on the Indicator label in January. Cheaper than importing the new US Arbelos release but the artwork isn't as nice IMO.

I've been on a Dario Aregento binge but was finding a decent copy of 'Opera' (with English + Italian audio/English subs etc) hard to locate. So it was nice to see today that Cult-Films are releasing it in January (I've got their very nice 'Suspiria' blu-ray).

Europe will have to wait 5/6 weeks longer but David Byrne's 'True Stories' is coming to Region-B on Criterion as well. I was not looking forward to buying this on expensive import. Yay.

I've already got Criterion's 2-disc 'Othello' Blu-ray on Region-A but it will be coming to Region-B in a couple of weeks (with all the same content including 2-cuts of the film). Can't recommend it enough.

Whoa this new German 'Das Boot: Complete Edition' really is complete:

https://www.amazon.de/Das-Boot-Complete-CD-Soundtrack-Hörbücher/dp/B07J35TB8S/

8-discs total. You get the short Theatrical Cut, the extended Director's Cut and the super long TV-Cut, spread over 5x 50GB blu-rays. Plus the soundtrack CD and 2 CDs with the audio-book (and a 24-page booklet). English and German 5.1/2.0 audio and subtitle options.

I've already got the 3 versions of the film but I'm still tempted :D .

This BBC 'Threads: Remastered' 2-disc blu-ray sneaked out in December without me noticing:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Threads-Blu-ray-BBC-Mick-Jackson/dp/B07JZVP6KX/

ThreadsBanner.jpg

Unlike other Remastered BBC blu-rays this one is of a show that was shot on 16mm film, so it should look good with the new 2K scan. It includes the original 4:3 broadcast version and a new Director-Approved Widescreen re-edit bonus cut.

I believe it's basically what would a nuclear holocaust really be like? I have never seen it but ordered a copy anyway because I know it by reputation from a few "the most scary/shocking TV shows ever made" type lists.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian called it a "masterpiece", writing: "It wasn’t until I saw Threads that I found that something on screen could make me break out in a cold, shivering sweat and keep me in that condition for 20 minutes, followed by weeks of depression and anxiety."

Edit: Now I remember. Charlie Brooker (creator/writer of Black Mirror) mentioned it on his old 'How TV ruined Your Life' show (from 2.20):

I concur this had me shitting myself more than the VHS copy of a copy of a copy of the banned Exorcist in the 80's :)
Kept me up for weeks...don't watch it as a double bill with the similar American film "The Day After"

The Man Who Laughs [1928]

This looks interesting. I'd often read that this film inspired the creation of Batman's Joker but have never seen it. If it comes down in price enough, I think I'll add it to my Batman blu-ray collection.

I find it interesting that the Blu-ray cover uses a green tint on Conrad Veidt's face (making his hair and eyebrows look green), and also uses purple (another color associated with the Joker). It seems as if they are trying to visually play up the Joker connection.

I've seen this movie before and never thought I'd see a Blu-ray release.  That is an instant buy.  One of my favorite silent films.

Here's another film I never thought would get a Blu-ray release.

^ Love that cover, the fonts in particular.

Howard the Duck is getting a UK blu-ray release on the '101 Black Label' series.

I haven't seen it since I was 6 or 7? In fact I've never seen all of it because my parents turned it off when this happened:

I'm curious to see what followed that scene :D .

^ HOWARD THE DUCK.... a movie I enjoy far more than any semi-intelligent person should. LOL

When I saw it in theatres in 1986, there were only 12 people in the entire theatre.  When the lights came up at the end credits, I was the only one still there....  :p

On closer inspection it actually says FLICKER ALLEY ...phew... :D

I have been re-watching the films of Astaire & Rogers over the last few months - i recently watched Shall we Dance and that could do with an upgrade..."Swing time" was on my film list to watch next Sunday but i think i will hold off now until the Criterion release (hopefully a UK release will coincide with the USA)

Im loving the Silent Running packaging. I already have the Eureka release but this looks tempting. I have often thought of rescoring an alternative version without the Joan Baez song. I love the song but i am tempted to add a bit of an instrumental in its place.

This is one for TM2YC

^ I've got the Dogwoof DVD of that Welles Doc and it's great.

Recently announced for a June Criterion release is John Cameron Mitchell's Glam-Punk Musical 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' (which I love). It's only taken 13-years for this film to get it's first blu-ray release anywhere in the world and it's a new 4K scan. Huzzah!

I'm getting this one for sure. Hope it's a Region-B release too but I'll import it if I have to.

Richard Stanley's 1992 film 'Dust Devil' has been hard to come by. Released for one week in cinemas and then hacked down by the Weinsteins. Existing for many years on an expensive out-of-print USA DVD release. At last it's getting it's first blu-ray release in a nice German package in May:

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07NMNNMBL/

81ctKuOzhkL._SX425_.jpg

As far as I can tell, using Google translate the features are something like:

- Blu-ray - The restored "final cut" (105 mins)
- DVD - Workprint (original cinema release I think?) (114 mins)
- DVD - The short Miramax cut (87? mins)
- DVD - Bonus features: Trailer, Interview with Richard Stanley, Interview with Marianne Sägebrecht, 16mm-Home videos, 3? bonus short documentaries by Richard Stanley, Picture Gallery
- CD - Soundtrack

A Director's commentary exists, so hopefully that is on there too. No conformation on it having English audio but that's probably safe to assume. It would've been nice to have all 3 cuts in HD but this is still great news.
