a nice little short that takes place immediately before the Battle of Jakku

High-five if you were thinking "Toronto bosh, toronto bosh" as the video started :D .

Yay no lightsabers! Unlike a lot of fanfilms, the acting was very good and was the best part. However, if you are going to have only one FX shot and save it for the big finale... then it really needs to look better than that (Not that I could do anything near as good ;) ).

Yep, the acting was really great for a fan film (for all 3 minutes of it...) and they did a great job with lighting, grading, SFX, etc. The VFX in the finale weren't quite up to that level of quality, but for 5 seconds, they were sufficient.

I thought the VFX in the last shot was absolutely fine for what they wanted to achieve and for the fact that it's a fan film.
