Video Darker After Color Corrected Render?

Hey guys, I just finished a render of my Back to the Future edit. It was the first version of the edit where I tried some minor color corrections. When I watched it back, I noticed a few issues. For one, some of the outlines look strange in a few scenes, but mainly the video is WAY darker.

At first, I thought I may have goofed, but then I started doing some comparisons. The preview in the editor (Sony Vegas Studio HD Platinum 11) looks great! Dragging the rendered video into Vegas shows it as looking the almost the same. But playing the video on my TV and in VLC Media Player, the colors are just horrible. A rendered version without the color correction looks fine in VLC and on the TV. I've never had issues like this with them, so I'm assuming its the rendered video file. But if that's the case, then why does the render look okay when dragged back into Vegas?

I guess the solution is to turn off the color corrector, but why did this happen??

What is your input source? My guess is that you are switching between color space profiles (Vegas only edits in RGB) and not handling the settings properly.

It's an MP4 created by Magic Blu-ray Ripper. I've never tried extensive color correction before, so I'm not even clear on what I did. I fiddled with a plug-in until it looked better. :-/

I've had the same issues with renders from a lossless avi blu ray rip. It happens both with and without color corrected files. I'm using Vegas platinum HD 10.0

Check the file properties with mediainfo. I'm sure that MP4 has YUV color space. You likely need to adjust the media properties in your vegas timeline

I'm thinking this is a codec taking a dump. Gonna try alternatives.

The source MP4 files are YUV, like you said. Where do I adjust that inside of Vegas? Poking around, I don't see anything about color spaces. Output says it's YUV too?

There are two different MP4 output options in Vegas. Try the MainConcept Internet 1080p template (adjust dimensions and frame rate as needed). Also, make sure your display adapter settings are optimized:

https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/957225

To avoid rendering and then later find out that the video rendered is actually darker then original edited you must right click the little blue monitor icon in the preview video tab and click on "Preview device preference" or just go to menu bar > Options > then Preference > then "Preview device tab". There you will find under "display adapter" > "Adjust levels from studio to computer RGB". That needs to be "CHECKED". Once that is done, you can now see exactly what you are color correcting in preview but only in the extended monitor view.

Thanks for all the help! I managed to get my Preview Device settings to reflect the actual output of Vegas. The in editor preview is still inaccurate though. Still fiddling around and trying to learn it all.
