Quantum of Solace (James Bond)

Yeah, looking forward to it but not cos of the teaser, I cant make head nor tale of it. Much too fast for me.

Hope the gunbarrel returns.

I swear I'll never go to cinema on Bond movie.

Neither will I.

Bond movies are ALWAYS best watched on TV. That's how I've watched every one so far.

From what I've heard about this film it's about Bond going on a revenge mission to find out who killed Vesper Lynd, but he doesn't sleep around or meet Q in this one.

So basically it's a story about a special agent who doesn't have any gadgets, jokes or sex & he's wants revenge.

Ummmm....

Why don't they just call this film The Bond Supremacy & be done with it. I mean they've hired practically everyone from the Bourne films to make it so they might as well be upfront about it.

I doubt I'll see it in the cinema. I've only ever seen 1 bond film in the cinema & that was Casino Royale because it wasn't your typical bond film. I just don't see the point in paying good money to watch a film that in one form or another I've seen 20 times already. It's much better to watch them on the telly where the adverts help drag out the bloody film into a 3hr epic. Which is always welcome on a quiet sunday afternoon.

Yes. He is on revenge mission. Yes. there is no any stupid gadgets. Yes. It should be called The Bond Supremacy.....but... story is so silly and I cant stand it anymore. after casino royale I was expecting something more reliable.... :p

It's a good film (for now, not sure if it will age well) but the sooner Eon make a Bond film again the better.

Both CR and QOS need Eonised!

Well, actually It's not hard to improve QoS.

[spoiler:1z3bkmc1]the problem is bad guy for me. It's hard to believe that someone could stole water resources from entire country and hid it in underground chambers. Low probability is what I hate in action movies. That's why I dont like Bond's movie and I like Die Hard or Leon for example..... and scene with latch is not needed[/spoiler:1z3bkmc1]

I found QoS to be a MAJOR disappointment (I'm in the UK, hence the reason I've seen it).

This UK reviewer sums it up pretty well on this YouTube review (Mark Kermode reviews films on a UK radio programme, this part being on a webcam):

"]

Beware spoilers of course!

Utterly lousy film - and I really enjoyed Casino Royale too!

Got a confession to make, my mate dragged me to see it last night & well... all my fears were confirmed. :(

Mark Kermode pretty much sums up all that's wrong with the film. Of course I would say that as I'm an Exorcist fan & as a result Kermode is my Yoda, but that asides he's bang on.

1. From the start I was worried. The opening car & roof top chases felt like Bourne, honestly if you walked in on the movie without knowing it was a Bond film you'd probably think you were watching a Bourne flick. Also, regarding the action. It's edited too quickly, Bourne got it just right but QOS goes to far with it & it's hard to know who's hitting who & generally what's going on. This adds to the action feeling like Bourne, cause you can't even see Bond it's edited so quickly.

2. The song sucks, it's got no chorus. I'm not being anti American here but Bond is a British character so it would be nice if the producers stopped sucking up the US audience & let a British act do a song. A stoned out of her tits Amy Winehouse or Duffy would of done a better job.

3. The story is deeply flawed. They go on about it being a revenge movie yet Bond doesn't go after the guy who betrayed his girlfriend, instead he goes after somebody else entirely. This I feel is what undermines the whole movie. What they should of done was have the guy who betrayed Vesper Lynd as the main villian. This would of made a platform for some excellent drama as you could of watched a film where Bond is struggling to do his duty for his country agaisn't his personal desire for revenge. Instead you just get Bond going around killing people, which is boring.

4. The build up to the sex scenes is so riduculas it's actually unbelievable even for a Bond film & it undermines the idea that Bond doesn't sleep around in this film cause he's grieving for Lynd.

5. The action & story do not complement each other. In the best action movies the action & plot are interlinked so they help drive the story on. That way the action has an emotional impact as well as creating cheap thrills. In this film it's like the director was sitting there with a watch clock saying "Right nothing has happened for 10mins, better blow something up". That is not good enough. :x

What this film reminds me of is a brand new expensive goodlooking TV that you can't get a signal on. Yes, it's expensive, Yes, it looks good but, it doesn't quite work. That sums up everything about this movie, nothing quite works. The title, song, action, story even the change with the iconic Gun Barrel scene, none of it quite works.

What adds insult to injury is The Dark Knight. Both Batman Begins & Casino Royale achieved the same thing. The broke from the past, rejuvenated a franchise & created an amazing film in the process. The problem is everyone expected the sequals to build on these films. The fact that The Dark Knight was able to do this (spectacularly) makes the failure of the Quantum of Solace that much more disappointing.

This film commited the biggest crime in art for me, it wasted genuine talent. :x

It's not just a bad film, it's an opportunity missed. :-(

Red Light: Don't Go

For the love of God! Don't Go!

Eh. Could have been better if it had at least another 30 or so minutes to help flesh out the story. Hopefully the DVD will remedy at least part of this problem, but we'll see.

On the plus side, the nod to Goldfinger and the gunbarrel at the end was a nice treat.

Yeah, I was very disappointed as well.

I feel like it was a decent action movie, but nothing about it felt like a Bond movie. They removed all of the sense of humor, the suave, the cool, the intelligence, and the fun. He became a one-note revenge hog of a character. And the plot was all over the place. And the bad guy was more or less Roman Polanski. And the direction and editing was terrible.

So yeah, not very good. I feel like with Casino Royale they stripped Bond to the basics, but in this they stripped away even the basics, so now he's just any action hero. This could've been Bourne Identity, but it was also no more intelligent than any of the Transporter movies. To be honest last week I saw the film Taken with Liam Neeson, and it's an infinitely better spy-action-thriller than this was. A big disappointment.

...But I want to fan edit it!

And the nod to
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER: the elevator fight.
MOONRAKER: jumping out of a plane without a chute.
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME: walking out of the desert wearing a tux.
DIE ANOTHER DAY: instead of an Ice hotel its a Fire Hotel and Bond has to rescue the helpless girl who just killed 3 men bare-handed.
THE SPY WHO LOVED ME: Holding the henchman by the edge and dropping him with a flick of the wrist.

Plane without a chute is a Moonraker referance :) (and Moonraker did it better IMHO)

I like the nods to previous entries in the series. Hopefully they will continue for a few films. as long as they are subtle they seem to work well.

Roman Polanski! I knew there was something there but couldn't put my finger on it.

I think they need to slow things down a bit now. They should look at the pacing of both the action scenes and the story telling in the early films.

I think I'll wait a long time before getting a dvd of this. Its only a matter of time before the Bond films have a "directors extended unrated cut" and this might be it.

very true!

Couldn't disagree more. :)

When a poor film like this makes such blatant references to previous films all it does for me is undermine the movie further. It's like the film makers are putting their hands up in the air & saying "Look we can't come up with anything original ourselves so we're gonna steal iconic scenes from a previous classic movie so you will over look the lack of ideas in our own film & think it's a classic through association". For me when a film is this bad such clumsy references do nothing but remind me of how good Goldfinger is & how bad Quantum of Solace is.

I also didn't think the Gunbarrel worked. It was cool how they did it Casino Royale but it didn't make sense where they put it in QOS & it felt clunky & out of place.

But hey, if you found something in this mess of a movie that you enjoyed all the more power to you. :)

If you can find a way to make the action less frenetic that would be cool. Also, you know how that roof top scene is intercut (for some reason) with a horse race, if you could sort that out too cause that was a mess. But like ohmss said an extended cut is really needed to see what can be done.

Has anyone else noted that two of the shitest films of the year also had the worst movie titles. Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a rubbish title & the film turned out to be just as bad & very few people liked the title Quantum of Solace & it seems even fewer people liked the movie.

you're right about the titles. I also noticed that those two movies were my most anticipated ones of the year :(.

First thing I'd do is try to cut some of the action out of Quantum. Most of it lacks any sort of tension, so it becomes dull and unnecessary. If he's going to kill everyone he goes looking for and get nowhere, why even have the action scene then? It makes the rooftop chase, the apartment fight, and the gunfight at the opera all completely and uttlerly pointless (though the opera sequence is one of the action scenes i liked.)

I'd rather take the like 20 good minutes of this and add it to Casino Royale, and then cut some of Casino Royale's more plodding bits to shorten the run time to under 3 hours.

I was thinking along the same lines so I'm totally with you on that. In terms of what's essential to the overall story arc IMO theres only 5 essential scenes in QOS.

1. The car chase at the beginning.
2. The Interrogation
3. The Root Top Chase
4. Desert Scene with Bond & rubbish villain (maybe)
5. Last Scene

The 1st three scenes carry on directly from CR so it would be easy to edit them on the end of the movie & then after the roof top chase where Bond goes back to the Interrogation room dip to black to the last scene of QOS & at the very end before the credits use a voice over from the main villian where he talks about Quantum.

Re the initial car chase scene - that was so badly edited that it would need more material so it could be re-edited to make it fit in with Casino Royale, otherwise it would appear somewhat incongruous.

I still cannot believe how bad QoS is. What a disastrous mess!
