Time is a flat circle...

I think it looks promising, but since it says virtually nothing about the plot or anything else, it's hard to judge. The look seems nice, though. Not too far off from the last season, but still obviously - and deliberately - something else entirely.

If nothing else, it settles my own nagging doubts about whether or not Colin Farrell (who I actively dislike, but I realise the man has some talent, at least) would be able to pull off middle-aged gruffness. Looks good to me.

I loved the first series, btw. Including the ending.

Haha, I used to dislike Colin Farrell, but he won me over with In Bruges. It will be interesting to see how this new season plays out. I think I can buy Vince Vaughn as a villain (didn't he play the bad guy in some movie where he was a stepdad or something). It will be pretty much impossible to live up to the first season but I have a feeling it will be entertaining nonetheless.

This looks good. I'm keeping my expectations low but really looking forward to June 21st.

Just finished the Season Premiere. Wow, what an episode! Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn have never been better. And I keep being impressed with the smart writing and awesome music.

Some thoughts...

I really didn't care for Rachel McAdam's family, it felt forced and too TV-cliche. Her sister's a web cam porn star and her father is a cult leader? I mean come on, are we going to find out that her mother was a crime lord or something?

When we first saw the car with the corpse and the crow, I thought "this feels very Lynchian" and then bam next shot they show a freeway sign for MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

I'm a bit wary of the four plotline structure, but glad they came together at the end. The weakest story so far is Vince Vaughn's, but maybe that's because he's not a true detective.

Holy fucking shit. Colin Farrell is insane. Best line of dialogue hands down, "You ever bully or hurt anybody again, I'll come back and buttfuck your father with your mom's headless corpse on this goddamn lawn."

Very much looking forward to the rest of the season.

i thought it was good
still too many stories going on in the premiere to keep track of things.
but looking forward to seeing how things develop.

Thought and noticed the same thing! The first season had shades of Lynch so I'm sure it was intentional. Excited to see how things unfurl in the next few weeks.

Good stuff. This first episode is getting a lot of hate from critics (even complaining about the theme song, and I like Leonard Cohen, I agree it's not the best, but honestly who gives a shit about the theme song, mute it or DVR and fastforward through the opening credits, it has no effect on the actual story)

I liked it. They set it all up and established who these characters are, I was fine with that. Colin Farrell awesome. Vince Vaughn was good. I'm liking Rachel McAdams character. Wooden dummy for knife fighting, and the book of five rings and Hagakure (book of the samurai) on her table. Bad ass.

I dug the hell out of Episode 2. I really don't understand the hate for this season. I mean really, the only things different from Season 1 (so far) is that there are more characters/sub-plots and it's not told in a flashback narrative.

I disliked Episode 2

I wanted more of that McAdams Ass, because... ya know....it was fun to look at

Well, there's the whole lack of interesting characters and plot too.

That being said, they set the bar really high with season one. This season was bound to far short, but in and of itself, it's pretty decent. The final scene of episode 2 was promising.

All right, now I admit Season 2 is a bit weaksauce.

I mean Jesus Christ, Velcoro gets blasted with a shotgun twice at point blank range... and then it's just casually resolved by saying the shooter used rubber bullets. I'm not an idiot, I was sure he would survive that cliffhanger, but what a cop out.

I still hold out hope for this season, but this was a very forgettable episode.

^I'm going to assume that
Birdman had a reason for not wanting Velcoro dead. If not, then yeah, sort of cheap way to have a exciting episode ender without following the consequences of it.
Season 2 has not been even close to as good as Season 1. I still hold out hope, however. Farrell and McAdams are great and I dig the little Lynchian moments here and there. Fingers crossed for the last 5 episodes.

Yes, most likely there was a reason Birdman only gave him a warning (albeit a painful one).

I was more upset that it was just casually dismissed and explained with one or two lines of dialogue. With the first scene in the bar I was excited because they showed him with a huge bloody hole in his chest. I said "Oh shit, they actually killed him." Next scene is him waking up and we see he just has some nasty bruises. gdism.

Wait, wat? I really enjoyed Episode 2 due to the gutsy ending. But to hear they undo that straight away in episode 3 is pretty disappointing... I'm also really missing Adam Arkapaw's cinematography from season 1. Not sure if worth persisting at this stage.

I'm surprised to read about the disappointment in this thread concerning this season (only 3 'sodes so far). I'm loving this inter-woven, small-town corruption, heavily-flawed protagonist driven monster of a crime story. It's so close to being a live-action James Ellroy novel that I'm desperately hoping they seek him out to write, or at least create the story, for the third season. This is exactly the kind of approach his work deserves.

The first season is terrific, but not nearly as ambitious as this one when it comes to juggling a multitude of character motivations. This is pure dime-novel glory porn, right down to every interviewee acting like they're doing the cops a favor when they question them. Season 1 had excellent cinematic and editing moments that it appears this one may lack, but that's hardly a point against what this season is trying to do. I kinda feel like I'm defending season 2 of the Wire when it came out...

Episode 4 was pretty good. Mainly it was more set-up and investigation. But I especially liked

the shoot-out at the end. I mean goddamn talk about civilian casualties.

I also enjoyed seeing W. Earl Brown in a small role, but

was bummed to see him take a headshot in the climax.

Interesting to note that this is the first episode of the series where Pizzolatto had a co-writer.

I also agree with beezo's comparison to the works of James Ellroy.

Wow am I glad I never gave up on this season. Excellent episode last night and a 90 minute finale next Sunday!!!!

I need opinions on whether people think Pizzolatto was doing a homage to a Michael Mann movie...

Specifically an homage to the movie 'Thief'
When Vince Vaughn sets fire/blows up the casino and clubs, James Caan does something similar in thief

Good to hear last night's episode was worth the slow burn. Looking forward to watching it tonight or tomorrow. I haven't seen "Thief" in a while, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was an intentional nod.
