Hi guys,

Been a very long time since I submitted a fanedit to the site, but I think I've managed to produce something that's worthy of being shared.

Faneditor Name: Father Merrin
Original Movie Title: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – The Editors Edition
Genre: Fantasy
Franchise: Lord of the Rings
Fanedit Type: FanFix
Original Running Time: An Unexpected Journey -182mins (reduced to 113mins)
Original Running Time: The Desolation of Smaug - 187mins (reduced to 49mins)
Fanedit Running Time: 162mins
Fanedit Release Date: 2015
Available in HD? Sort of
Brief Synopsis: A leaner version of the original films. I set out to minimise the Dwarves’ unattractive personalities and have removed the love triangle, but not the love story entirely. I removed Beorn as his scenes served no purpose to the overall plot and just slowed the whole thing down. It’s probably closer to Guillermo del Toro’s original structure in terms of where it ends, but I have given the film two cliff hanger endings.

My Unexpected Journey edit is influenced heavily on Menbailee’s (Stone giants and dwarf montage).

List of General Changes:
Dwarf prologue and Frodo gone
Shire lasts 21mins
Radaghast opening scene gone
Troll death made less clunky
Troll cave reduced
Radagast and Gandalf talk reduced
Chase scene reduced
Elves & Dwarf dinner gone
Stone giants gone
Goblin scene reduced
Beorn gone
Thranduil and Tauriel scene reduced
Tauriel and Kili reduced
Barrell scene reduced

Original Movie Title: The Hobbit: There and Back Again – The Editors Edition
Franchise: Lord of the Rings
Fanedit Type: FanFix
Original Running Time: The Desolation of Smaug - 187min (reduced to 54mins)
Original Running Time: The Battle of the Five Armies - 144 mins (going to be reduced to 134mins)
Fanedit Running Time: 174mins
Fanedit Release Date: 2015
Available in HD? Sort of
Brief Synopsis: A leaner version of the original films. Very much a case of getting to Smaug as quickly as possible without losing continuity. I’m very happy with how I fixed the ‘Smaug covered in gold’ problem which meant I was able to cut the Dwarves stuff completely at the end. The Battle of the Five Armies changes have yet to be done. Overall I liked the film so will probably keep most of it, except Alfrid.

List of General Changes
Fish scene gone
Opening Master scene reduced
Toilet scene gone
Bard history lesson gone
Dwarves outside mountain gone
Dwarves leaving mountain gone
Tauriel saving Kili reduced
Dwarves vs Smaug gone
Smaug exploding out of the mountain in gold fixed.

Hi
I take it this is going to be a 3 in 2 edit each part about 3 hours.
That would be very interesting, most of the edits being done now are attempting a 3 in 1 cut and some of them are very Draconian :|. It would be nice to see a more balanced cut.
Have you done the first part yet?. Is it ready for review?
Do let us know

Hiya HM
Yep they're three films cut down to two films.

Film 1 is 2hrs 40mins
Film 2 is 3hrs

I'm glad you're not into draconian cuts as my edits set out to tone things down, not remove things entirely at the expense of continuity.

So if you're looking for the love story to be removed, this isnt the edit for you.
If you're looking for the orcs to be removed, this isnt the edit for you.
If you're looking for Radagast to be removed, this isnt the edit for you.

I have toned down what I felt was the overcooked parts of the movie, but also other elements too.

For example I felt one of the problems of the film is the audience being asked to go on a 6hr journey with dwarf characters who quite frankly arent likable and are unsympathetic. In my edit I have removed a number of Thorins snotty remarks that made him look kinda stupid and I have also trimmed scenes of the other dwarves being greedy and annoying.

So I've removed Thorin being rude to Bilbo when they first meet, now it looks like Thorin gently teases him a bit and Bilbo responds by making everyone laugh, I've removed Thorin's dumb response to Gandalf after Bilbo buys enough time to be saved, also cut Thorin losing it after being thrown in jail. Similarly in the troll cave I cut the dwarves stealing the gold.

I'm currently exporting the first film now. I'm not into torrents or chopping the film up and uploading it for download, if I can I'll share it through Dropbox, much simpler.

With 7 edits already, I'm assuming you are already very familiar with IFDB submissions. PM me if you are unsure :).

I'm not sure IFDb existed the last time he submitted an edit.

This sounds very promising! Would like to watch this one. It almost sounds like a wishlist edit for me (except the Smaug vs Dwarves fight, I did like that one)

Thanks Amok :)

Yeah, the dwarves are nowhere near Smaug in my version as it made for a much cleaner cut to remove those scenes. In my edit the Bilbo/Smaug scene is now much more comparable to the Bilbo/Gollumn scenes.
