I've put this under Movies instead of Music because (to me) it does relate more to movies.

Here are some of my favourite soundtracks, in alphabetical order by composer:

  • Alan Silvestri: Back to the Future, Predator, The Abyss, Judge Dredd, Captain America: The First Avenger, Van Helsing
  • Basil Poledouris: Conan the Barbarian, Robocop, Starship Troopers
  • Brad Fiedel: The Terminator, Terminator 2
  • Brian May: Mad Max, Mad Max: The Road Warrior
  • Carlo Silotto: The Punisher (2004)
  • Charles Bernstein: A Nightmare on Elm Street
  • Christopher Franke: Universal Soldier
  • Danny Elfman: Batman, Batman Returns, Darkman
  • David Arnold: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall
  • David Newman: The Phantom, The Marrying Man, Firefly/Serenity
  • Elliot Goldenthal: Alien 3
  • Ennio Morricone: The Dollar Trilogy, C'era une volta il West, The Thing, Once Upon a Time in America, What Dreams May Come (His rejected score is FAR superior!)
  • Gabriel Yared: Troy (His rejected score is FAR superior!)
  • Hans Zimmer: Black Rain, Days of Thunder, Backdraft, The Thin Red Line, The Last Samurai, Man of Steel, Interstellar, The Dark Knight, Gladiator
  • Henry Jackman: Captain America the Winter Soldier
  • Henry Mancini: The Pink Panther movies, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Lifeforce
  • James Horner: The Rocketeer, Apollo 13, Aliens, Battle Beyond the Stars, Star Trek II, Braveheart, Avatar
  • James Newton Howard: I Am Legend, Wyatt Earp, The Last Airbender, Green Lantern, King Kong
  • Jerry Goldsmith: Alien, Supergirl, Rambo First Blood Parts 1 & 2, Total Recall, The Shadow, Deep Rising, Capricorn One
  • John Carpenter: Halloween 1 & 2
  • John Frizzell: Alien Resurrection
  • John Ottman: X-Men DOFP, Superman Returns, X2
  • John Williams: The Long Goodbye, Jaws, Star Wars Original Trilogy, The Fury, Empire of the Sun, JFK, Jurassic Park 1 & 2
  • Marco Beltrami: 3:10 to Yuma, Scream, Snowpiercer, The Wolverine
  • Mark Isham: Timecop, Warrior
  • Mark Mancina: Speed 1 & 2
  • Michael Giacchino: The Incredibles, Up, Mission Impossible 3 & 4
  • Michael Kamen: Die Hard trilogy, Event Horizon (didn't really like X-Men > X2 is much better!)
  • Patrick Doyle: Thor
  • Pierre van Dormael & Philippe Decock: Mr. Nobody
  • Robert J. Kral: Superman: Doomsday & Green Lantern: First Flight
  • Trevor Jones: Cliffhanger, Last of the Mohicans
  • Vangelis: Blade Runner

And finally, composers that (I think) are overrated and overused:
Ramin Djawadi and Tyler Bates

While I also recognize the beauty of Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings and Hobbit soundtracks, and other works, I don't really feel that any of them stand out (for me personally). Although I have seen a lot of the films he scored:
Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly, The Silence of the Lambs, Mrs Doubtfire, Philadelphia, Seven, Crash, Cop Land, eXistenZ, Analyze This, Dogma, High Fidelity, The Cell, The Lord of the Rings 1, Gangs of New York, Panic Room, Spider, The Lord of the Rings 2 & 3, The Aviator, A History of Violence, The Departed, Eastern Promises, Edge of Darkness, The Hobbit 1.

If I'm wrong, don't hesitate to point out great Shore soundtracks ;)

I'd love to see other people's lists so I can check those out as well :-D

Some favorites of my childhood:
(not counting Conan The Barbarian, cause it's simply the best of all and cannot be in any "list".
It's up there, on the mountain with Crom.)

Charlie Chaplin: The Kid (1921 - music composed by Chaplin himself in 1971)
John Barry: King Kong (1976)
Bernard Herrmann: The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad (1958)
Queen: Highlander (1985)
Erich Wolfgang Korngold: The Adventures Of Robin Hood (1938)

4. Prince's Purple Rain soundtrack

^ Oh yeah, good choice. I had it on in the car at ear-bleeding volume only the other day :). Good luck on finding a YouTube video of that ;-)

Surprised not to see Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky in here somewhere. It sounds as fresh as if it was composed yesterday, and is the granddaddy of many current film scores. If you're a fan of Poledouris' Conan the Barbarian score (and who isn't one?) you're in for a treat:

I've never experienced the score outside of the film itself, which was notoriously recorded using the Soviet Union's least technically efficient equipment, so that has certainly impacted my perception of Prokofiev's score (though I adore his work on Ivan the Terrible Part I and Part II).

Alexander Nevsky is a great film, though the sound is dismal.
Every now and then a symphony will tackle it with full chorus.
I experienced that once in my local hall and am now spoiled and won't view on TV.

I'm always dumbfounded by the fact Iron Man 2 even had a score to begin with :p Never noticed any of it in the film :-D I thought AC/DC scored the whole thing :-D :-D

The twin release of the Elfman Batman score and the Prince Batman album may never be topped.
