Anyone know of a safe reliable youtube downloader? There are so many.

Someone recommended 'Aiseesoft Free YouTube Downloader' which is easily found. However there are very few reviews online for this particular freeware.

I use jdownloader. Just copy/paste the link, jdownloader decrypts it and you get to choose the source (480p, 720p, etc...).
It's very easy and most people (if not everyone) here use it to download and unpack fanedits as well, so if you've got a question on how it works, you'll almost always find an answer here. And jdownloader does have a technical forum and frequent updates.

the website keepvid works quite well too, if you don't have jdownloader installed.

jdownloader for me as well

I use 4K Video Downloader.
It will get YouTube subs, as well, though those are often computer generated and horrid.
It can also just extract the audio portion.
It loads quickly, is a small filesize, and does not hog resources.

Cheers for all the info guys. I'd heard of JDownloader and it seems like a lot of people are using it. I did notice a lot of reviews report adaware but that's often the price of freeware right?

Jdownloader also gets subs, and can extract just audio.

As for adware/spyware/etc., make sure you grab jdownloader 2, and make sure you do a custom install at each step and uncheck the extra stuff. If you do a basic standard install you get all the junk.

Jdownloader 2 is BETA and is still being tested?

Not sure, but it's worked for me. The reason I started using it is Jdownloader 1 stopped supporting youtube.

By the way, who the hell calls a software update "whatever 2" :p

Megatube works great for me on Windows 8.1. You get to choose format (mp4, flv, etc) and quality (medium, hd, etc). Very easy...

You can also use "Free Rapid Downloader" which is very similar to JDownloader.

I always use DVDVideoSoft, it's free and there are no limits to it except small ads at the bottom. That doesn't bother me at all.

I just started using clipconverter in the past week, now that (for some reason, possibly temporarily) jdownloader isn't recognizing youtube clips anymore. I have to say I'm finding it more convenient to use.
