here is a nice little video essay documenting the cultural impact Episode 1 had on modern movies and fan culture.
the Phantom Edit gets brought up and while FE.org isn't mentioned specifically, the main page is prominently displayed during his brief section on the rise of fanedits.
it's got a lot of behind the scenes and beyond the scenes footage of the infamous film.
(if this was already posted, i missed the thread and this one can be deleted or merged or whatevs.)
(or merge with the Video Essay thread. crap. i totally forgot about that one.)
Firstling attempt coming soon. i hope.

I haven't looked around yet for duplicates but I'd say this is worthy of its own thread rather than a merge with the Video Essay one.

I watched and it's a good essay. The first part really captured the insane levels of hype in 1999 when we all naively thought "It's Star Wars, how could it be bad?!?". I think the hype around TFA was nothing like as big because we'd been burned once already.
In case anybody is worried, it isn't one of those blinkered "the prequels are overdue evaluation as brilliant films" videos, or "10 reasons why they are secretly masterpieces" but it doesn't sh*t all over them either. Pretty even handed, whichever camp you are in.

Am I the only one here who likes The Phantom Menace unironically? I love the music, the acting, and the amount of memes and amazing expanded universe works (Legends at least) makes me much more forgiving to it than other people.

You know you're not the only one. Whag here is a huge fan.
I like Phantom Menace too but I don't think it's a good movie. Okay at best. I had written a review of it a while ago in the Star Wars thread.

I can agree on the music, it's fantastic.
Memes, eh, whatever. It's a movie. EU same, eh. Those are personal preferences though, so if it works for you so be it.
.....
But the acting? Really?
I'll give you Liam. He's great. Jake is terrible. Nat is terrible. Ian is ok I guess, for how little he's in it. Ahmed is....I don't even know how to judge it. Ewan is....not present. And to be clear, it's not the actors faults. George is a shit director, that's why. But regardless, I think this is the first time I've ever heard the acting praised, even from people who do like the movie.

Well to me, it's adds to the unintentional I get every time I watch the prequels (although I admit it could be better).

Whenever I think of the acting in that movie I think of Amidala when she says:
"Viceroy, mnemne monemea mumble mumble..."
I think that's how it goes.
