I got Handbrake functioning and giving max quality on my mac but it takes over 20 hours is that normal? Is my computer just too old? What can I do to speed up the process?

Using max quality settings is going to make it take a long time, and wont compress the file very much at all.
It's a good idea to keep the quality around the 21-23 default in order to get a balance between file size and quality. With these settings processing time should be around as long as the video is in my experience.
